STANWOOD HIGH SCHOOL
FAMILY UPDATE FOR WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 12, 2022
SHS VISION STATEMENT
Stanwood Spartans are united in cultivating character, modeling respect, teaching leadership and connecting to community.
Excitement is in the air at Stanwood High School. Students and staff are enjoying a "regular" start to the year with assemblies, sporting events, clubs, and more.
We look forward to seeing you this Tuesday, September 3th, at our curriculum night. Come see for yourself what is going on at the school.

SEPTEMBER 13TH - CURRICULUM NIGHT
We will hold a curriculum night for parents/guardians on Tuesday, September 13th. Families can pick up student schedules between 6 and 6:25 p.m. in the commons. Then families will follow their child's schedules to hear about the curriculum used for their classes. **We have an "open time" for families who have multiple children at SHS or for single parents/guardians. That will give you a time to see a couple more teachers if you want to.
We will also hold a club fair between 6 and 6:25 p.m. in the commons.
SEPTEMBER 14TH - LAST DAY FOR SCHEDULE CHANGES
September 14th is the final day for schedules changes. Students can pick up forms in the counseling center.
We cannot change a schedule based on a teacher request, lunch preference, or wanting to be in a class with a friend.
SEPTEMBER 15TH - MAKEUP PICTURE DAY
Has your child had their picture taken for the 22-23 school year? If not, then they need to get their photo taken on Thursday, September 15th, during the school day. We use the photos for safety purposes and also in the yearbook. The same photo is used for student id/asb cards.
Parents/guardians are encouraged to order photos ahead of time. Your child needs to bring a hard copy of the receipt when you order online. Here is the link:

VOLUNTEERING AT SHS
CALLING ALL PARENTS/GUARDIANS!
Who wants to go back to high school for a couple days a year? We are gauging the interest for a parent volunteer group (no name yet) to be formed at the high school to support our students with positive engagement. This group would be like the Watchdogs groups that are formed at many of our elementary schools but is not exclusively for dads. We want everyone involved who wants to support our students and the hard-working staff at the high school. Our youth depend on us to lead by example! If you are interested, please e-mail your interest to join us for a short kick off meeting (time and date TBD) to tedmccammant@gmail.com by Monday, October 3rd.

NEW: CHROME BOOK ASSISTANCE/CHECKOUT
Support for Chromebooks will no longer be located in the Library. Students who need assistance with their Chromebook will need to visit the main office, specifically Mr. Ward. Students will be able to seek support during 5th and 6th periods of the school day.
Before seeking assistance, please try these troubleshooting steps:
LUNCH SCHEDULE
We offer two lunches at Stanwood High School. Your child's lunch period is based on their fourth period teacher. The teachers on the first and second floor have first lunch. Teachers on the third floor have second lunch (exception to that are Mr. Ward, Mrs. Gammell and Mrs. Ray as they have first lunch). Students will be able to purchase a lunch in the commons area at Stanwood High School or bring their own. Students can look for the lunch posters around campus to find out which lunch they have.
DRINKS/FOOD ON CAMPUS
We encourage students to bring water bottles and use the water bottle filler stations located
throughout the school. Students can bring outside drinks and food to school. However, we
don’t accept food deliveries from companies, such as Uber or Grubhub. When
parents/guardians drop off food items for students, the students need to pick up the food in
between class or at lunch. Please make sure your student knows you are dropping off food for
them. Students should not leave class to pick up food.
STUDENT DRESS CODE
- A health or safety hazard shall be presented by the student's dress or appearance including possible membership in a gang or hate groups;
- Damage to school property shall result from the student's dress; or
- A material and substantial disruption of the educational process will result from the students' dress or appearance.
ATTENDANCE
Students late to school - Students are required to stop in the office and sign in when they are late to school (or need to leave early).
Students are considered absent when they are more than five minutes late to class.
**Parents/guardians have 72 hours to clear absences. If absences are not excused (after 72 hours), then the student will not be allowed to make-up assignments.

Family Communication
September 9, 2022
I am reminded of the power of routines as we head into our second week of school. Routines that are predictable and repeatable provide a sense of stability and structure for our students and families. This year, we will be setting routines and developing skills to learn how we can support one another across three key areas:
-
Social and Emotional Learning
-
School Improvement Goals and Strategies
-
District-wide Planning for Success
We have framed these key areas around a promise to our community: all students in the Stanwood-Camano School District will be empowered to learn in an inclusive setting and prepared for the future of their choice. This promise is foundational to what we commit to providing for all students and is the basis of our five-year strategic plan. This plan will drive the routines and structures we build to support staff, students, and families.
Introducing our Strategic Plan 2022-27
On Aug. 16, the School Board approved the district's five-year Strategic Plan. Many of you contributed to the creation of this plan over the past year by serving on one of the planning teams or completing a survey. More than 2,500 individuals participated in this nearly year-long process, and we are grateful for your help.
The Plan features four goals and measures for student success.
-
Goal 1: Every student in preschool to Grade 3 will develop the social-emotional and academic competencies critical for their future growth and development
-
Goal 2: Every student will be a learner that is empowered to advocate for and pursue their own educational passions and to address issues in collaborative and resourceful ways
-
Goal 3: Every student will demonstrate continuous growth toward meeting academic, social-emotional, and behavioral goals at a pace that eliminates opportunity and achievement gaps
-
Goal 4: Every student will graduate from high school with the skills, experiences, and readiness to pursue the future of their choosing
Through this process of creating the Strategic Plan, our planning teams “painted” our portrait of a Stanwood-Camano graduate:
-
College, Career, Life-Ready Graduate
-
Resilient Scholar
-
Effective, Collaborative Communicator
-
Intellectual Innovator
-
Solution-Seeker
-
Responsible, Community-Minded Citizen
I invite you to review the Strategic Plan four-page summary HERE.
Throughout the year, as we embed the plan into our daily work as a district, I will continue to report to you on our progress.
