Reading: Touching Spirit Bear has provided wonderful life discussions in addition to the literary conversations. I love it when the children dig deeper into the text! Book clubs are progressing well. I've set a completion date for the books: February 12. Monday the clubs will have time to map out the remaining chapters to assure that they are on target for this date. They will also be looking for an afternoon/evening this week that they can all get on Edmodo for a book club conversation.
Writing: We are deep into document analysis for our DBQ: Why did so many colonists die? The children will use information gained from the document analysis to write an essay. This project has been extremely useful in the past in helping my classes with the organization of an essay. This is an at-school assignment.
In Math, we are moving through the Volume unit. It is likely that we will have a test on this Thursday. Please check your child's agenda for possible updates regarding this.
Valentine Exchange
The children are encouraged to bring a container to receive Valentines in. It can be a simple bag/box...or it can be a decorated bag/box. I will be discussing the procedure with the children. This is not going to be a lengthy event. They will place their box/bag on their desk; then walk around the room delivering their Valentines. When they are all passed out, I will staple bags closed, and they will be placed in their backpacks. Boxes will be placed at the back of the room until the end of the day. They will have to wait until they go home to go through their box/bag.
We will also have a special snack on this day, but it will not be a party... As usual, we will have lots to do on this day.
