Raleigh Hills Newsletter

Message from Mrs. DeMartino

Dear Raleigh Hills Community,

We have been hoping, planning and preparing for the day when we could welcome students back into the building. We are looking forward to seeing our K-2 hybrid students in person beginning Monday. We also look forward to welcoming our 3-5 hybrid students on Thursday. If you are remaining in CDL, teachers have special things prepared for you also! We are excited to be moving forward as a learning community in this new way. It will be important for both CDL and hybrid students to pay careful attention to the schedules that are included in this newsletter as things will change for both groups next week. Thank you for partnering with us through this transition.

One of the tools we are teaching students to use at Raleigh Hills is called the Mood Meter. It has four quadrants that represent the energy and pleasantness of the feelings associated with the emotions in each quadrant. As you are preparing for the changes that are coming up, this can be a great tool to use to chat with you students. Remind them that Ms. Orchard and Ms. Muskat have shown them this tool in SEL lessons and ask them to tell you about it. You can ask how they are feeling about the changes and have them identify the emotion word that matches their feelings. Once they have identified the emotion, they can decide if staying in that emotion helps them meet their goals in the moment or if they need to shift. They have also learned strategies to shift that emotion if they decide they want to shift. It's also ok to stay right there and feel their feelings.

This is a tool we are using to help us meet the social/emotional needs of students at Raleigh Hills and we hope it will be useful to you as well. It can even be used to ask students about their day. Instead of saying, "How was your day?" and getting a one-word response, you can ask students how they felt at school today and why. Often this can elicit a conversation!

As I said, we are overjoyed to be welcoming many students back to school in grades K-5 next week and we are excited to see our middle schoolers beginning on April 19th. Have a pleasant and restful weekend!

Warm regards,

Jennifer
