The Riverwalk Roar
February 2, 2020
Note from Dr. Compton
Pride,
Over the past few weeks, I shared some tips from the author Michael Hyatt's who wrote Free to Focus. We have looked at sleeping, eating, moving, connecting, playing and reflecting. For this final practice, I want to share the notion of unplugging from work and devices.
There is a law of diminishing returns concerning our work which refers to a point at which the level of benefits gained is less than the amount of energy invested. According to Hyatt, when we work beyond fifty hours a week, our productivity goes down, not up. It is easier than ever to continue working after hours and on the weekend. Our phones and computers allow us easy access to emails we need to answer and projects that need completing. Our devices and work can rob us of our most precious responsibilities of taking care of ourselves and those around us. How can we keep that from happening? When we get home, Hyatt suggests "not thinking about work, not doing any work, not talking about work and not reading about work." Other families make a mutual commitment to put away all electronic devices at a certain time each evening or upon entering their home. These decisions are so hard given our perceived demands from our work and the distracting power of our devices. We need to model the way for our kids that there are limits to using the cell phone and computer and game controller (and TV, too). When we set limits, we help them realize that others matter much more than our work or our entertainment or our distractions. Have we thought about how much we are really on our phone (consider checking out your iPhone screen time report)? Has it become a routine habit more than an intentional decision to use it? What might be one simple step we can take to unplug and focus on what really matters? We may be surprised how much it will mean to our children.
If you want to get serious about unplugging, there are several "Unplug Challenges" for 21 days that you and your families can try. One popular site that you can consider exploring is 21 Day Hero where they have different 21-day challenges, one of which is a 21 Day Unplugged Challenge.`
Pride, let's have another outstanding week!
Sincerely,
~Dr. Compton

Sporting Balls
Since returning from the break, we've noticed an increased number of students who are bringing sporting balls to school (i.e. footballs and soccer balls). While these items are allowed and they can be played with during lunch, they are also being played with in the halls and in some cases, in the classrooms. Please remind your students that all sporting balls must be kept in their book bags throughout the day and that they may only be played with before school and during their lunch period. We will follow our cell phone return policy in the case where a child's sporting ball is confiscated by a staff member.
Headphones
Before the break, we sent out this linked letter. It explains that due to safety concerns, headphones may not be worn at any time, except for when allowed by a teacher, as part of their class instruction, or at the end of the school day. We will follow our cell phone return policy if a child's headphones are confiscated by a staff member.
