An Update from Principal Phelan
October 19, 2022
Dear Lowell Families, Faculty, and Staff,
I express my deepest gratitude to all the first responders, our two resource officers, Lowell school staff, my colleagues across the district, and our families for helping us manage a scary event at our school today.
We are still in the process of supporting our students, families, and staff immediately following the accident. I want to give you a few updates concerning our day. After the initial accident, first responders from WFD and WPD began evaluating students for injuries. We identified six students who suffered minor injuries. These students were transported to the hospital for medical attention and evaluation. All six students have been released and are resting at home.
All the other students riding the L1 bus were picked up by a family member at the scene. Many students returned to the Lowell West building to resume their school day. We made sure to have counselors available as the students arrived at school. Our SEL team has checked in with students who needed support and will continue to check in with students who may need to process the event. If you feel your child would benefit from a check-in tomorrow, please contact a member of the SEL team.
Today, students will follow their typical end-of-the-day dismissal plan. This afternoon Mrs. Phelan, Mr. Chen, and a member of our SEL team will ride the bus home with the students to provide extra support. Mrs. Phelan will also ride the L1 bus tomorrow morning.
The investigation is ongoing, and updates from the Superintendent's Office will follow as more information becomes available.
