Soil Erosion

What Are The Different Types of Erosion?
Wind Erosion: movement or displacement of soil cause by it being picked up by wind
Water Erosion: displacement of soil by water over a period of time, the water picks up the soil and transfers it.
Sheet Erosion: a form of water erosion that is the removal of soil in thin sheets caused by rain drops or overland flow, effective because it can cover a lot of land and go unnoticed
Rill Erosion: another form of water erosion that occurs when many small streams of water form and are running across surface of soil
Gully Erosion: a form of water erosion that occurs when many streams of water come together and form a larger stream, such as valleys or low areas of fields.
Fertility: ability of soil to retain plant growth
Wind Erosion
Water Erosion
Soil Fertility
Examples
- Taking minerals and nutrients from soil
- Removing most fertile part of soil (topsoil)
- Soils ability to store water is reduced
- Effects the way plants grow
Ways to Minimize
Planting Vegetation as Ground Cover
Matting the Soil
Contour Farming and Terracing
Creation of Windbreakers
Ways to Minimize Erosion in Construction
2. Control water build up and prevent formation of gullies

2. Find a way to move water effectively so it does not ruin soil.
