Abstract
The age adjusted rate of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is 72% higher for African American women than for white women. Historically, minority women have had limited access to health care resources. The June 2009 report on health care disparities in women published by the Kaiser Family Foundation identified Alabama as one of the thirteen states that scored worse than average on the health status of women. Promoting activity and wellness was identified in Healthy People 2010 as key in eliminating disparities in CVD for ethnic and racial minorities. The purpose of this quasi-experimental, pre-test/post-test study was to evaluate the impact of an individualized exercise program offered through an accessible gym for under served African American women.

NUTRITION AND WORKOUT SOLUTION USES FITNESS TECHNOLOGY
A local health conscious entrepreneur and advocate for the President’s Council on Health Fitness and Nutrition, named Lauren Chaplin-Providence, and principal of Fort Providence Fitness Boot Camp, took her many years of Wall Street experience as an owner of the first black female owned and controlled investment bank to recently launch a fitness and nutrition management system that is available on every platform from palms and personal computers to tablets and phones, including both the Apple iphone and android operating systems.
One of the several benefits of her program is that she offers more than just an app for people on the go. The system, dubbed iMAPfitness.com or mfitness (short for mobile fitness), includes not only the necessary fitness technology, but includes a myriad of fitness equipment from mats and dumb bells and tension bands for resistance training to flexibility and abdominal equipment as well as a timing apparatus.
Her goal is to engage an underserved demographic. She has included with her launch, the opportunity to provide to financially challenged and/or hardware challenged participants, the opportunity to secure a 7” tablet when subscribing to the system. The only thing that she does not supply is access to the internet itself. In many urban communities, like some of those in Chicago, Comcast provides discounted internet access to households with school aged children that meet various financial requirements. At present, Mayor Rahm Emmanuel has provided to the City of Chicago over 300 public wifi/internet accessible locations making Fort Providence’s iMAPfitness accessible to all.. The participation of free internet service providers allows entire families to participate in the fitness, nutrition and educational facets of her program.
Additionally, the program includes participation inducement such as a social media platform, that may reward a client with anything from free personal or group training like boot camp services to merchandise or even cash incentives. This helps to keep the client engaged and enhances the user’s experience. Likewise, this promotes more participation for demographics that can substantially benefit from such an innovation, as her target audience, primarily minority populations, is plagued by preventable diseases that can be thwarted by active and regular participation in an exercise program.
To further support camaraderie in these somewhat polarized communities, the built-in social network and blog helps to inform as well as foster a fitness oriented community.
Easy access to the program is located at Fort Providence Fitness, www.iMAPfitness.efitnesstracker.com. Prospects may set up a free account and take advantage of the app for two weeks with no financial obligation. The app is included with all fitness and nutrition instructionals.
