California's nickname is the Golden State.The capitol building is also in Sacrammento. Today people call it California Bear Flag. The bear on the flag stands for strenghth. The state bird is a quail.The California redwood tree became the state tree in 1937. California's state flower is the Golden Poppy. A farmer killed California's last known grizzly in 1922. Benitoite is California's state gemstone. Mexcio won California's independence from Spain in 1821. With in days the village was almost a ghost town. In the 1840's the US was growing in the east. One party led by Jacob Donner, stared to late in the spring of 1846. In 1846 the Mexican war broke out between the US and Mexico. Without other tools or other supplies, the mission land his people now owned. Spanish exploration led to the Rancho way of life in California. Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo explored the area in the16th century. Yet Spain did not began active settlement of California for two more centuries.
