Driver is Deaf or Hard of Hearing
Jack Musser is a member of Boy Scout Troop 298 in Frisco, TX. He is currently working on his Eagle Scout Project and I want to ease the tension between deaf/HOH drivers and police officers when being pulled over at a routine traffic stop. Jack is profoundly deaf and uses cochlear implants. He has created a placard for deaf and hard of hearing drivers to keep in their cars to be used in the event they get pulled over by a police officer. He has also created a video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOFImnvOQBg&t=1s.
Meeting Mr. David by Ms. Tubbs' Class
We met Mr. David at our school, Davis Elementary School. He is a college student and he is learning to be an audiologist. He has cochlear implants like us! When he was 15 he got really sick and he lost his hearing. That’s when he got his cochlear implants. Mr. David told us it’s hard for him to hear in noisy places like the gym, in the car, in restaurants, or in the howling wind. Just like us! He told us that it’s important to advocate for ourselves. “Advocate” means to tell people what you need. Like:
· Can you say that again please?
· Can we move some place quieter?
· Are you wearing the mic? Can you beep me? Can you fix it?
· I didn’t hear you.
· I don’t understand. Can you say it a different way?
It was great to talk to Mr. David!
Third Annual Deafinitely Not Different 5K and Fun Run
It is not too late to join the the fun of our annual 5K and Fun Run which will be held on Saturday, February 23 at Vines High School. This year we are extending the activities past the run and will be offering activities for students, families, and the Deaf community to interact and socialize. Of course there will be food and fun.
We want to thank our sponsors for supporting our program by their generous donations. Our sponsors so far are
- Scratch Paper Signs
ESI
Akorbi
Daryl Flood Foundation
Indian Creek Dental
The CAVE Realty Team
Collin County Pediatrics
Texas School for the Deaf
HOPE Pediatric Occupational Therapy of Frisco
Thanks for your help with the race and supporting our students so that we are able to provide additional language, social, and advocacy experiences for our students. So far this year the money has funded Pearson's Pizza Field Trip, Parent Information Night and Fun Fair, plane tickets for teams to compete in the NTID/RIT Middle School Math Competition and Gallaudet Academic Bowl South Region Competition, PSHS Homecoming Parade, Haggard Pizza Buffett, and more to come.
