WELCOME BACK BMHS STUDENTS!
Dear BMHS Families,
I hope you are enjoying a great summer and you are ready to start the 2022 - 2023 school year. The staff at BMHS is excited for the first day of school on September 1st, and the anticipation of students back in our hallways and classrooms has us looking forward to what is going to be an excellent school year!
The vision of BMHS is that all students will graduate college, career, and community ready, and demonstrate the 6 traits of our Portrait of a Graduate. To meet this goal, it is our responsibility as educators at BMHS to prepare each student for exceptional post-secondary learning, and to prepare our students for the careers they are passionate to experience. We are committed to aligning our work with our vision and mission to provide students high quality instruction in an environment that reflects high expectations, is safe, supportive, and inclusive. We look forward to cultivating strong relationships between home and school so that we can work collaboratively to ensure the ultimate success of our students.
I will be communicating weekly with you through our school newsletter, The Knight News. Please also check your email and our website frequently for updates. This letter contains important information regarding the start of the school year. Please read it carefully and review the information with your teen.
I look forward to an amazing school year!
Sincerely,
Emily Pelz
BMHS Principal

STUDENT ARRIVAL & DISMISSAL
Students may arrive at 7:30 a.m. daily if they would like to take advantage of eating breakfast. Any students entering the building for breakfast must come through the Main Entrance, and will be directed to the cafeteria where they must remain until 7:45.
Students not eating breakfast may enter the building through the Main Entrance or Athletic Entrance doors at 7:45. All doors will be locked at 7:55. Students who come to school late will be required to sign in at the Main Office before going to class.
Students will be dismissed from school at 3:30. Please avoid picking your student up early.
NEW BACKPACK POLICY
No backpacks in the classroom is a new safety protocol that will be in place this school year. Students should plan to put their backpacks in their lockers when they arrive, and get what they need from their lockers during passing time. The only accommodation that will be considered for this expectation is a clear (see through) or mesh backpack.
CELL PHONES
Cell phones create significant distractions in the classroom and in the school environment. Cell phones must be off and put away during class time, unless the teacher gives specific permission for a student to use it. Students may have their phones out during passing periods and lunch.
STUDENT HANDBOOK
The Student Handbook can be found at the following link: https://www.sdb.k12.wi.us//cms/lib/WI01919658/Centricity//Domain/483/2022_23%20Family%20Handbook%20English.pdf

ATTENDANCE & TARDY POLICY
Attendance
Student success is dependent on being present at school. Please make sure your student is attending and on time everyday. If your student must be absent for any reason, make sure to communicate the absence with our attendance secretary. To report an absence call 361-3405 or email memorialattenance@sdb.k12.wi.us.
Students and families are encouraged to schedule appointments outside of the school day. If your student must miss school for an appointment they are required to provide a note documenting where they were.
Tardy Policy
Students must be on time and ready to learn. If a student is late to school they must enter the building through the Main Entrance doors and sign in at the Main Office. The school will contact the parents / guardians of any student who arrives late to school without an excused reason. Students who are already in the building, but late for class will be addressed by their classroom teacher. Teachers will work collaboratively with parents when students are habitually late, and may also use the 4-step discipline process to address the behavior.
EARLY RELEASE
Students are released early from school the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of every month at 2:30. This time is built into the schedule for teachers to have the opportunity to collaborate with their colleagues around student learning, and is imperative to providing students with high quality and responsive instruction

VISITORS TO ALL SCHOOL DISTRICT BUILDINGS
The safety, security, and well-being of our students, families, and staff is our number one priority.
In 2020, the School District of Beloit began using the Raptor Visitor Management System. The Raptor system allows us to better monitor visitors, contractors, and volunteers who enter our schools. Upon entering any district building or school, all visitors will be required to sign in and present a picture ID. Acceptable IDs include, state-issued IDs such as a driver's license, a passport, or a consular card. The ID will be scanned into the Raptor software system.
This security protocol follows Board Policy 860, Rule 1 that states, "any person other than a student or district employee is regarded as a visitor" and must report to the building's main office for authorization before going anywhere in the school building.
MAIN OFFICE PROCEDURES FOR STUDENTS & VISITORS
We are in the process of renovating our Main Office to support new procedures for visitors and students who need to come and go during the school day. These new procedures will be in place to increase the safety and security of our students, staff, and visitors.
FOR VISITORS:
When you approach the main entrance doors, press the intercom button and our office staff will greet you. They will ask for your name and the reason for your visit before letting you in.
Once you enter the vestibule of the Main Entrance you will check in at the window that is located immediately to your right.
If you are at the school to pick up your student, the main office staff will verify you are identified on Skyward as someone who is able to pick the student up. If you are not listed in Skyward we will need prior permission from the student’s parent in order to release the student to you.
Students will meet you at your vehicle.
If you are at the school because you are a volunteer, the main office staff will verify that your volunteer application is approved. You will be asked to present a picture ID. Acceptable IDs include, state-issued IDs such as a driver's license, a passport, or a consular card. The ID will be scanned into the Raptor software system, and you will be provided with a visitor’s badge to wear while in the school.
