Word Knowledge Network: Key to Fluency and Comprehension
The more a reader learns about a word—its sound-to-spelling structure, its meaning, and how it functions in a sentence—the more fluent the reader becomes. That’s what the Word Knowledge Network is all about. Evidence supports a multi-component process for learning words through systematic and explicit instruction and practice. This session shows how Sortegories develops the Word Knowledge Network based on this multi-component approach. Participants also learn how to generalize this approach to any decodable text.
Sortegories co-authors Nancy Chapel Eberhardt and Sheryl Ferlito will discuss:
1. The components of a multi-component approach to develop fluent readers.
2. The features of explicit instruction for each component
3. How Sortegories translates this approach into practice
4. How to generalize the instructional principles of a multi-component approach to any decodable text.
Objectives:
- Attendees will be able to identify the components of the multi-component approach and the contribution of each component to fluency and comprehension.
- Attendees will practice instructional activities to translate the Word Knowledge Network into practice.
