Betsy's Bits
June Summer Edition
In Case You Missed It:
Since our last day all together we have had some of our Stallion family turn in their resignations for next year:
- Ashley Parker will be going to be the office manager at the new charter school in Lee County beginning in July.
- Haley Smith will be going to teach 6th grade ELA in Wake County which is much closer to home.
- Katheryn Fanning will be staying home after having the baby in August. They learned recently that Matt will be deployed in October.
- Miranda Colwell has been accepted into a graduate program at UNC in August. It is a full-time year-long program. She does plan to sub and help out when she can at SLMS.
- Gaye Capps will be retiring at the end of September.
The following people will be joining our Stallion Family in August:
- Heather Hughes, girl's Health/PE teacher, is coming to us from Wake County and lives in Lee County. She is a mother of three with her oldest joining us in 6th grade.
- Kimberly Morril, Career Exploration, is coming to us from Ingram Elementary where she has been an elective teacher/TA (AVID, Leader in Me, and test prep) and sub bus driver. She will be offering some of the same modules as our old STEM class and new modules will be added which include finance and carpentry.
- Betsy Burke, 6th grade ELA/So. StudiAes, is joining us from West Lee Middle School where she has taught 6th and 7th ELA. She will be joining Wendi Wicker on the Dolphins.
- Alex Rivera, front office support (part-time), has worked in the front office a busy middle school in Chatham Co. She is bilingual.
- We have a couple of hires going before the Board in July: 6th grade ELA and 7th grade math, and bookkeeprer. I will introduce you to these new family members in the July Summer Edition of Bits.
Just to keep everyone in the loop I wanted to revisit the moves around the school:
- Kevin Degon is going to teach 8th grade So Studies on the Seahawks team.
- Katherine Allmond is moving into the full-time front office support position.
What's going on:
- The front office will be closed Friday, June 29 - Friday, July 6.
- Carpets will be cleaned and gym floors will be waxed July 2 & 3.
- Seventh grade hallway floors are almost finished.
- Our custodians will be working on 6th grade hallway next.
- Allison and Joy have been working out kinks with the Exploratory schedules. Joy have been working with someone from SLHS and are getting closer each day.
- Jamie and I have been working on scheduling, have turned 7th grade into Joy, and are working on 8th grade now.
- Evan and I will finish 8th grade and then begin on our newest Stallions after the AVID Summer Institute.
- I heard from Angel Mills, ESL Director, that we have a large cohort of 6th grade students needing more direct services for next year. She is advocating for a teacher, and we also will be creating a ESL class to be taken during exploratory time for the first semester for those needing direct services. This is to assist in preparing our children for the ACCESS test in February. ESL student growth is now a factor in our report card grade (began this year).
- I have heard from Kenna Wilson, EC Director, that she is advocating for an additional EC teacher for SanLee because of a group of students coming to SLMS needing a teacher highly qualified in Adaptive Curriculum. If you know of a teacher with this degree looking for a great school, please send them this way!
- We are still needing at least one math teacher on 7th grade hallway. Reach out to your friends and see if they know of someone that might be interested.
- I've submitted our updated Student and Staff Handbooks to be reviewed by LCS laywer, Jimmy Love. Hopefully, these will be reviewed and approved by next BITS.
Professional Development Opportunities:
July 23-26 ~ Canvas (Learning Management System)
July 24-26 ~ Differentiation for the Gifted Learner
July 30-August 3 ~ Best Practices/Content Week - highly recommended for everyone!
August 6-10 ~ New Teacher Induction *required for new teachers in our district
August 7 & 8 ~ Sanford AVID Summer Institute - highly recommended for new hires and anyone with less than 12 hours of PD in AVID.

And, if you don't want to leave home, but still want to reflect, recharge, and renew through professional development, there are also a whole host of online options for digital literacy credit through NCCAT and our very on Robin Neville has multiple "By the pool" PD's for reading and digital literacy credits.
Be sure to go on Schoollink, look through the calendar, and sign up for things you want to do. Most face-to-face do provide a stipend. *New hires should let Betsy know what you will be attending. She will let the presenters know you will be there and get you the information you need about dates, times and places.
