Science
Students will be finishing up their LEGO lab next week on Tuesday, Sept. 8th. Students have been practicing to write clear and detailed step by step directions when explaining how to build a LEGO design. Groups will then meet and give verbal directions for other groups to replicate their design based on the specific directions that have been said.
The rest of the week will focus on the Scientific Method. We will examine each phase of this process in detail for each day of the week.
5th Grade Level Math
Students took several pop quizzes this week to assess student learning. These will be coming home on Friday in students' Team Folder. Please double check and make sure that scores are entered correctly in the gradebook. Mistakes, although rare, do happen when entering scores from time to time.
1. The first quiz that counted as a formative grade (10% of one's overall grade) was a Daily Word Problem Pop Quiz. We've had a featured word problem that students do each day when starting math class. It is required for students to show their work in a picture, chart, diagram, etc., and to also clearly write their answers on the line and in the space provided. ALL of these Daily Word Problems are posted on Blackboard if you wish to view.
2. The second quiz was a 9 question quiz taken straight from the Mental Math Cards App over "mixed operations" on the "medium" level. This will be counted as a summative assignment (90% of one's overall grade). Students have not only been doing this nightly for homework, but also time has been given in-class to practice and get help as needed.
Next week we will continue to work in Chapter 2 which involves both rounding and adding/subtracting whole numbers and decimals. We will have a pop quiz or two to assess student learning and "teachability".
