Strait of Hormuz & the Persian Gulf
Physical features of the Middle East and North Africa
The Strait of Hormuz
This is the only entrance and exit to the Persian Gulf, a large source of the World's oil.
Control
The Strait of Hermuz is controlled by Iraq, they often threaten to close it, and make us realize how powerful they are in this matter.
Oil Production
You can see how much oil is found around the Persian Gulf, it and the Strait of Hermuz are the main ways of transporting oil out of this oil-rich area.
Oil and Danger
This area is not only important because it is the exit for a lot of oil found on surrounding land, but there is a lot of oil found in the Persian Gulf itself and is brought up by oil rigs. This area can also be very dangerous partly due to malfunctioning rigs.
Frequent Use and Dependency
Since this area is so important for oil production and transportation, it is very crowded and everyday tons of oil worth thousands maybe millions of dollars is transported through the Strait of Hormuz, if Iraq were to get hostile, or shut off the area, we would be in deep trouble.
