A Note from the Principal
Dear Families,
Welcome to 2020! The new year is off and running and so are our students! I am always surprised by the changes in our students in just a couple of weeks--some have really grown! While we all enjoyed the extended break, I am sure that many of you are happy to see a return to a daily routine. In just over a week, our first semester will come to a close marking the end of the first half of the school year.
I am keeping this brief as our newsletter is packed with information this week, so be sure to read through all of it. I just had to share the picture to the right because it brings a smile to my face every time I look at it! I was casually walking by the library the day before Christmas break, and this is the picture I snapped of some of our third graders at a moment's notice. JOY! Happy New Year!
Peace and blessings,
Diane Raguz, Principal
MAP Testing - January 6 through January 24
At home, you can help to prepare your child by ensuring that he/she gets plenty of sleep each night and eats a nutritious breakfast each morning. Encourage your child to do his her best on each test. The goal is for the testing to provide a detailed picture of what your child knows and is ready to learn--whether it is on, above, or below grade level--and to plan instruction accordingly.
Green Knight of the Quarter
Joe Goff is a fourth grader at Saint Paschal Baylon who was selected as our second Green Knight for the year! As many teachers shared, Joe seems to be the perfect choice as our next Green Knight. His thoughtfulness and willingness to help others certainly stands out. Miss Martinson wrote, “I would like to nominate Joe Goff for the next Green Knight. Joe has always been a kind and courteous young man. When Joe was in first grade, he was a thoughtful and positive student. He was quick to include others and a friend to everyone. He continues to share this positive trait. He has a pleasant disposition and is always quick with a smile and greeting when I see him. He is a great example of the four qualities we look for in a Green Knight-Compassion, Courage, Civility, and Character centered around Christ.”
Joe lives with his parents, Amy and Bob, and his three older sisters, Maggie, Ellie, and Annie.
When asked what kind of things he enjoys doing with his family, Joe responded, “We like to go on vacations to Michigan together, and we like to look at Christmas lights.” Joe has many activities that he enjoys. His interests range from sports such as soccer, baseball, golf, and basketball to drawing and playing the trombone. Joe enjoys playing computer games as well. When asked what his favorite subject is, Joe shared that it was math because it comes easily to him. It is no surprise then to hear that Joe is interested in pursuing a career in engineering in the future if a professional baseball career doesn’t work out. When asked why Joe is the perfect Green Knight, his sister Annie responded by saying, “Joe is always smiling, encouraging, and laughing. He is so nice.” Ellie explained that Joe is very funny and that it is always nice to have him around. Maggie commented that Joe is a peacemaker who is very honest. Mr. Goff agreed with his daughters when he said, “Joe is very compassionate, thoughtful and concerned about others.” Mrs. Goff shared that Joe is attentive and thoughtful and will often do things at home without being asked.
Kind, helpful, polite, and a true gentlemen were all words used to describe Joe. Mrs. Curtis believes that Joe is respectful to teachers and other students and that he is a good example to his classmates. Ms. Raguz said, “Joe regularly greets me with a smile and has proven to be an honest young man and a positive example in the classroom and school community.” Mrs. Longano agrees and explains that Joe’s compassion for others makes it easy for him to help his peers. Mrs. Sarosy explains that Joe is a leader that anyone can model themselves after, and Mrs. Uzzo states that Joe is an excellent example of an SPB Green Knight. Congratulations, Joe, on this well-deserved honor!
Scholastic Writing Award of 2020
Saint Paschal Baylon School is quite proud of the creative writing talents of our junior high students. Three eighth graders have won recognition in the Scholastic Writing Awards of 2020. Since 1923, this national contest presented by The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers has recognized the creative talents of young adults in grades seven through twelve in 29 categories.
Brady Barker, Jimmy Lawless, and Rachel Paulett earned Honorable Mention recognition for their poetic entries. Honorable Mention awards are given to writing demonstrating creative potential.
These junior high students will be invited to a reception held at the Cleveland Institute of Art on Saturday, January 18, 2020 where their works will be displayed and awards given out. What a gift these talented Saint Paschal Baylon students possess--the ability to delight with poetry!

Communication Folders and Assignment Notebooks-Sponsorship Opportunity
For many years, we have been fortunate to have enough paid advertisers to provide student communication folders and assignment notebooks to all of our students at no cost to parents. You have the opportunity to sponsor or place an advertisement on our new official communication folders and assignment notebooks for the 2020-2021 school year. This is an outstanding way for both students and parents to see your message on a daily basis. Your help is needed in sponsoring these folders and books with an ad so that they may be offered once again at no cost to our students. Please see the flyer in today's communication folder.

GRADES 3 & 4 PARENTS/GUARDIANS-we need you!
The link for January for Grade 4 and February for Grade 3 can be found below.
We are asking that each family (mom, dad, grandma, etc.) choose at least two days to volunteer each time slot being 11:00-1:00. There are many, many time slots open! We are so grateful for the help!
This is a great way for you to interact with your child and his/her classmates during the school day! Lunch/Recess Volunteers should arrive to school at 11:00 and check in at the office. Duties will include supervising students at recess, escorting students to the cafeteria from recess, and supervising in the cafeteria. Volunteers will be with one teacher and two "core" volunteers each day to help direct. Remember that after your two volunteer time slots, you are done for the year, as each month is assigned to a different grade.
