District Goal: WE empower all students to achieve post-high school success.
Vose Elementary School Open House
Community members joined the Vose Elementary School students and staff for the Open House on October 26. Current and former students led tours of the new school that opened this September.
Vose was designed as a prototype school by DLR Group Architects. Sato, Hazeldale and William Walker elementary schools will all have the same design.
The new Vose has a capacity of 750 students. The 87,200-square foot school includes 32 classrooms, 9 additional teaching spaces, a stage, teaching area in the library and a dividable gym. The school was built by Triplett Wellman.
Early Release in Action: Drums!
“Five rosy apples hanging on a tree” (strong beat, low tone)
“The rosiest apples you ever did see” (strong beat continues)
“Along came the wind and gave a big blow” (rub drum)
“And one rosy apple” (hold up pointer finger)
“Fell down be……low” (drum roll, high tone – teacher lead one low tone on “low”)
Those were the sounds resonating from the gym at Sexton Mountain Elementary School during early release on a Wednesday afternoon in October as K-8 music teachers collaborated on the use of drums in teaching rhythm, beat and patterns.
Following the lessons on strategies for drum circles using hand drums and other percussion instruments, the group transitioned to a lesson on using buckets as drums to teach students about rhythm and patterns.
It was a very interactive and productive afternoon as the group moved to the beat of their own Drums!
Stay Healthy the Cold & Flu Season
Cold and flu season has already begun, but there are things you can do to keep yourself and your children healthier. Prevention measures include washing your hands frequently, getting lots of rest, drinking plenty of fluids, and avoiding touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Home is the best place for a child who is ill. The Too Sick for School informational flyer has guidelines to help you make the decision about when to keep your child home from school.
Safe Routes to School Update
On November 5, 2017, we set our clocks back an hour, making it darker earlier in the afternoon. With shorter days this time of year, motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians need to be extra alert to see each other in low light situations.
Improving visibility means improving safety for all road users. Wearing light colors or reflective clothing is one of the simplest things pedestrians and cyclists can to do keep themselves safe.
Here are additional suggestions to help keep you safe while walking and biking:
- Wear bright, reflective clothing and shoes when walking or biking.
- Don’t wear headphones, text or talk on a cell phone while crossing the street.
- Be aware of vehicles around you. Make eye contact before crossing in front of vehicles.
- Don’t assume that cars see you or are going to stop.
- Driving or biking? Expect and slow down for pedestrians in popular walking areas, around schools and parks, and near crosswalks.
When more people walk, bike and take the bus, it makes the route to school safer, less congested and more fun for everyone. Thank you for continuing to walk, bike and use the bus. It’s the way to go!
