Week at a Glance
Week of January 2nd
Happy New Year and Welcome Back
I trust everyone had a wonderful break that was relaxing and recharging. As the New Year approached many of my friends were coming up with one word to use as their motto for the new year. I saw resilience, power, recharge, focus, etc... Of course this lead me thinking of my one word. To my amazement, I found this very hard to do. I feel blessed day in and day out. I work at an amazing school, have the best of teachers, awesome students, and I must say my husband and daughter are also pretty amazing as well. We continue to challenge ourselves at Burbank to push more for inclusion, embrace progress monitoring and use the DATA to make decisions, give and receive feedback, and the list can go on. So what could be my one word? Even as I write this I am not convinced that my word will not change or be refined as my own personal vision becomes clearer, but for now, my one word is POSITIVE.
POSITIVE in the face of challenge and change- knowing that only real growth comes from being challenged.
Always looking for the POSITIVE in others. Sometimes this can be hard when we find someone to be difficult to communicate with or work with. I hope to find the positive intentions and goodwill in their words and actions and to not be stopped by their tone or body language.
POSITIVE LANGUAGE when thinking about future goals and current challenges... to personally strive to live with 100% positive intentions.
Even as I am typing, seeking clarity in my thoughts regarding this upcoming year, I continually come back to the word GRACE. Showing grace to one another when mistakes have been made, extending a hand to those in need, and being mindful of others feelings and perceptions.
I hope this is not too deep! I feel like I am writing in my diary for all to see. A lesson I learned a long time ago is that I can only be responsible for my own actions and decisions. I cannot change others behavior through mandates or lectures, but rather through modeling the choices I expect to see.
At Burbank I see hard working staff who has grown in so many ways over the past three years. I want to see that momentum continue. I do not want us to slow down in our pursuit of all children reading on grade level, knowing where all children stand academically, and creating differentiated learning opportunities for all. I want to continue to grow in our inclusivity of all students...Creating a model school environment where students with disabilities have the same opportunities as others. I want to continue to see the amazing communication between home and school.
Most importantly I want ALL students to feel POSITIVE thoughts and emotions about school. I want all students to feel valued by their teachers and classmates. I want all students to hear positive language spoken to them daily. I want all students to know they walk into a clean slate everyday. I do not want the burdens of the adults be burdens to the students. I want our positive intentions to be authentic, meaningful and deeply rooted.
I want 2019 to be the the most positive year yet! Thank you for being on my team and working together to make sure we meet the needs of EVERY CHILD, EVERY DAY, WHATEVER IT TAKES!
Love,
Ashley
Things to know...
* Jeans all week!
* No staff meeting this week!
* We do have Child Studies next week! Check the schedule and come prepared :)
* Mid-year PALS testing starts next week.
* When planning field trips be sure to coordinate with the cafeteria and the nurse! The cafeteria needs notice for bagged lunches if needed as they may need to order food. The nurse may need to send medication. Thanks for keeping everyone in the loop!
General Reminders...
* Classroom meetings 3x week!
* Use of anchor charts
* One student in the bathroom at a time!
* Submit small group lesson plans and follow the developmental stages of reading plans in small group.
* Maximize instructional time through clear expectations and routines.
* Use positive language with students and colleagues.
* Use DOJO consistently and with positive intentions. You do not need to message parents multiple times through the day if it is not an emergency, this often times creates frustrations.
* Have fun, work hard, and I think you are awesome!
Have a great week!
