What is Fundations?
This year, WCSU schools are all using the Fundations word study program in grades K-2. Word study is one component of a balanced literacy approach. In addition to reading books as a class, in partners, groups, and independently, students also spend time studying the rules of reading.
Fundations Keywords Chart
At the beginning stages of Fundations, students learn to match letters to sounds using a chart of visual symbols. Students learn to say, "A, apple, /a/." This pairs the sound "a" makes in the word apple with the letter's visual symbol. There are three levels of Fundations that build from this basic chart.
Making Word Study Fun
Fundations makes word study fun through a variety of activities including repeating sounds with Echo the Owl puppet, hands on letter building trays, and motor activities such as sky writing and tapping out sounds. You can learn more here.
THE HARVEST HOEDOWN IS COMING!
Our annual Harvest Hoedown is coming! It is a fun night of dancing, games, and WES community building and takes many hands to plan and pull off. The PTO and student council collaborate to plan and host the event, and we welcome your involvement. A planning meeting will happen on Monday, October 7th at 3pm in the WES library. Please note that there is no school this day, but we will be meeting at WES. Mark your calendars! The Hoedown itself is scheduled for the evening of Friday, November 15th.
PENNY DONATIONS STILL ACCEPTED!
Our students have earned so many pennies this year to accompany the recognition they have received for being safe, respectful, and ready to learn! We have used up all the pennies that were donated at the beginning of the year and will gladly accept more donations of pennies in the WES office. Many thanks!

Toys From Home
Our school does not have an official policy on toys and items from home, but we highly discourage parents from sending students to school with items from home with the intention of allowing them to be played with or used at school. There are many reasons for this. Treasures from home can become a distraction in the classroom and need to stay in the backpack during class. Toys from home on the playground can easily be lost, damaged, or a source of conflict. Valuable learning time can be lost trying to track down valued personal items when they are misplaced. Items from home such as Pokemon cards sometimes get traded and the trades leave students and parents/guardians disappointed with the outcome. Please consider carefully before allowing your child to bring to school a valued personal item. Sometimes an item from home such as a stuffy that stays in the backpack can be a source of comfort, and personal electronics are sometimes allowed on the bus. Please consider carefully what your child is allowed to bring to school.
