Husky Teacher News Flash
Week of October 10 -13, 2017
PBIS Training Tomorrow
Fall BrightBytes Coming Soon
The fall BrightBytes data collection will occur during the week of November 6th. This will be completed during PACK class. Teachers will have has the full week to try to get to 100% completion by staff and students.
The LT Department will send all further information out to principals, parents, and students.
HMS Class Test Calendar
This calendar is uploaded to our website for parents to view. Please ensure that you are adding all common assessments and projects to this calendar.
We want to continue to grow in our communication with parents and guardians. This allows them to know ahead of time when their child will be testing.
Sheltered Instruction Training
If you need Sheltered Instruction training or you just want to learn more strategies for working with LEP (Limited English Proficient) students, please attend this training on Saturday, October 21st from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm.
We will meet in the BISD Board Room (use the side entrance). Bring a lunch, your jacket and a computer.
For additional questions, contact Mary Villafranca. It will be posted in Eduphoria soon. This is open to all teachers in BISD.
ESL Certification
This information is from Mrs. Villafranca regarding ESL certification:
If you have a teacher who needs their ESL Certifications (meaning they serve LEP students and they don’t have their ESL Certification), remind them to take the online practice test and to sign up for the test. We are reimbursing them for the ESL Certification test if they pass. We want to be in compliance with TEA at each campus. For more information, please contact me.
Adding Audio for Oral Testers
Attached you will find instructions to create a test for oral testers. This will help tremendously with the amount of oral testing students, as well as alleviate the number of students in the learning lab. Students who need only oral testing can use headphones and remain in the classroom.
Mr. Wynn is a great resource to discuss issues with the directions or to get feedback on how it is working for his students with oral testing accommodations.
From Learning Technologies Department - backing up laptops
Teacher Files Backup
You will be seeing emails coming through about teachers backing up their files in advance of the Teacher Laptop Replacement. We will be providing resources, how-to’s, and will be on campuses the week PRIOR to the replacement to help teachers back up their files. We do not have exact dates at this time for the replacement, but are starting the backup procedures NOW to allow teachers sufficient time to get all of their files backed up.
#create Submission Wanted!
#create - BISD’s Fine Arts and Literary Magazine - Call for Submissions
The fall edition of #create is currently accepting submissions from students and staff. We are looking for writing, art, photography, music, video, etc.
Here is a flier with information regarding #create:
We hope to have all campuses represented in our fall magazine. The theme for the magazine is “Coming Home.”
Thanks for helping to get the word out. If you have not had a chance to look at our preview edition, please take a look! - https://issuu.com/createbisd/docs/_create_preview_issue__4_
Two New Calendars - Update!
****The link below is the direct link to the subject testing calendar on the HMS website. We are having trouble loading the tutorial schedule, however, all teachers schedules are posted just outside their classroom door. We will continue to work on getting it uploaded to the website.
The tests will be identified by the grade level.
Tutorial schedules:
Teachers will have their grade and subject level tutorial schedule posted outside their classrooms. If a student needs tutoring, they may see any teacher in the subject for which they need help. They do not have to visit with their teacher.
If a student needs to make up a test, it is best to make arrangements with their individual teacher. However, they can make arrangements for the test to be left with another teacher in the same subject. This concept allows for students to have more opportunities to receive assistance.
Buses Only Please!
his is a reminder that no personal vehicles are permitted to use the bus drive/pick up area until all buses have vacated HMS. The approximate time that you may use the drive to get to the back of the school is 4:20.
Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our students' safety first!

Attendance Information
RESEARCH SHOWS THAT ATTENDANCE IS AN IMPORTANT FACTOR IN STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT.
Truancy may be filed if a student has 3 or more unexcused absences in a 4 week period or 10 in a 6 month period. A phone call or note within the 3 days will prevent the notation of unexcused.
Families will be notified when a student has fallen in to this area, as well as, if the excused absences become excessive. Students will an large number of absences will be required to gain their educational time back after school hours.
Parent Involvement Policy
Please take a moment to review the attached Parent Involvement Policy for 2017-2018. Your student should have brought home a copy of this policy last week, however, a link has been attached with a copy of the policy.
We look forward to working with you and your student this school year.

The web-based survey has 24 items that measure four elements, including engagement with school, hope for the future, entrepreneurship and career/financial literacy. The survey will take an average of 10 to 15 minutes to complete is for 5th through 12 graders only.
