St. Mike's Matters - Thursday Notes

November 16, 2017 Issue #10

Dear St. Michael Families,

It was wonderful to see so many of you at our PTSA General Meeting last evening! I am grateful for the leadership of our PTSA Executive Committee: Michelle Newlean, Mary Janelle Cady, and Patty Steele, and for all of the parents serving as PTSA Room Reps this year. I feel so blessed to serve in a community where parents model lives of faith-filled stewardship for their children and for all members of our community by generously sharing their time and talents.

We are the school that is “A Family of Families”- through the generosity of your

stewardship, and your willingness to take steps forward in sharing your time and talents in new ways. As Mrs. McGill and I presented last evening, our S.M.A.R.T. Gala provides awesome opportunities for you to share your gifts with our community through the diversity of the various committees. From year-to- year, our auction relies on parents taking steps in their stewardship by helping to lead, coordinate, and help with the auction for the very first time.

We love and need these “first-timers”! In fact, as we announced here last week, we have

restructured the auction to ensure that new parent volunteers are institutionally supported in their roles and that many tasks are coordinated in-house by Mrs. McGill as Stewardship Development Director. I ask you to please prayerfully consider helping to preserve our tradition of the S.M.A.R.T. auction by serving on an auction committee or as a co-chair. If you were not able to attend this week’s auction meeting, or you were not able to sign up for an auction committee last night, please contact Mrs. McGill. Through your service, the fruits of your stewardship will be seen in the faces of the students that are able to obtain a Catholic education due to our community’s contributions at the gala.

At last night’s PTSA meeting I provided an overview of our school’s accreditation process. I am thrilled to share with you that we have finalized our self-study document after conducting a rigorous, inclusive, and data-centric process over the last year. Our self-study report will be used by the accreditation visiting team when they are here with us between March 21-23 to evaluate our school and verify the information in our report. Our self-study culminates in an action plan listing our significant accomplishments, significant goals, and critical goals. Drawn from the depth of data analysis and reflection of our self-study, our three critical goals are to:

  • Increase student learning by integrating the Schoolwide Learning Expectations (SLEs) into the culture of St. Michael Parish School.
  • Intentionally engage, challenge, and inspire the highly capable and highly motivated

student.

  • Use various assessment data, including MAP, to meet the needs of all learners.

Once verified and confirmed by the visiting team as goals that we should indeed be focused on, we will spend the next six years implementing the critical goals through various strategies. I look forward to sharing more information with you regarding the visit as we get closer to March. Additionally, I will be sure to share the results of our visit with you. Thank you for supporting us through this accreditation cycle!

Blessings,

Connor Geraghty

Principal

The scrip sales are up but we still haven’t reached our goal of full participation in the monthly Scrip Club, and our office sales are below where they need to be to fund and subsidize various activities throughout the school year (including Field Trips).

In order to help spur sales, we are going to have a contest! At the end of November, the classroom that has the most Scrip Club participation will win a donut party. In order to make things fair, families that join (or have already joined) will receive a point for each of their children’s classrooms.

St. Paul Street Evangelization (SPSE) at St. Michael Parish

St. Michael Parish has launched a new and exciting ministry called St. Paul Street Evangelization (SPSE). The focus for this is evangelization outreach by proclaiming the good news of Gospel of Jesus Christ as well as inviting folks to attend St. Michael Parish by meeting them on the streets and in the public square of the City of Olympia.

This outreach proclaims the Gospel in a non-confrontative way to those who will lend a listening ear. This follows our Church’s call to the New Evangelization that calls each of us to deepen our faith, believe in the Gospel message and go forth to proclaim the Gospel. The focus of the New Evangelization calls 1) all Catholics to be evangelized and then 2) go forth to evangelize.

As part of this we will also be doing evangelization outreach on the campus of St. Michael Parish to include St. Michael School and St. Vincent de Paul. You will soon see volunteers offering holy cards and rosaries, prayer and an invitation to attend mass at St. Michael for those who don’t already, on our parish campus. This will be done in a non-confrontative and respectful way.

If you have questions or would like to volunteer, please contact Mario Villanueva at mvillanueva@saintmichaelparish.org and 360-292-7104 or Brandon Jones at bjones@saintmichaelparish.org and 360-292-7108 at the St. Michael Parish office.
