Kindergarten Staggered Entry
WELCOME Lil' PANDAS
Dear Kindergarten Parents/Guardians,
Welcome to Penny Road Elementary School, Class of 2032! This is an exciting time for your child and we are looking forward to welcoming our youngest Penny Road Pandas into our family. We are a school that believes that education can transform lives and that “all of our students are uniquely capable and deserve to be challenged and engaged in relevant, rigorous, and meaningful learning each day.” We embody our District’s core belief and we make it our mission to serve our students in a capacity where this mission becomes our reality. Enclosed is information that will aid you in preparing for their first day of school and the beginning of your child’s educational journey.
Penny Road Elementary School participates in Staggered Entry. The purpose of Staggered Entry is to provide your student with an introduction to school. Your student will experience the majority of a school day including specials, recess, lunch and other activities. During this time, our teachers use this opportunity to provide academic screening assessments to help identify your student’s unique needs and learning styles. Each student is assigned a Staggered Entry Date during the week of August 26th – August 29th, 2019. Staggered Entry days are based on your student’s last name and your student only needs to attend the one day indicated:
Monday, August 26: Students with Last Names A-I
Tuesday, August 27: Students with Last Names J-O
Wednesday, August 28: Students with Last Names P-Z
Staggered Entry is used throughout Wake County as a best practice for kindergarten enrollment. This approach allows us to get to know your student, which allows us to make the best classroom assignment possible for your student. On your assigned day, your student will join a small group of new friends in a classroom and will be able to meet all our teachers, instructional assistants, and administrators. To ensure this day runs smoothly, please note the following:
Students can arrive between 8:45am and 9:15am.
Plan to park and escort your child into the building and to depart after checking in.
Pack one snack and lunch or pack one snack and send money for a cafeteria lunch. Lunch is $2.75 for lunch (snacks are extra).
Pack a rest towel and a change of clothes.
Plan to pick up your student in the carpool line at 3:45pm or meet him/her at your assigned bus stop.
On Friday, August 30th we will host our Kindergarten Meet the Teacher from 9:30am – 10:30am. You will be able to meet with your child’s teacher and classmates at this time. Class lists will be posted outside the kindergarten classrooms and in lobby, so you will know your student’s assignment. Your kindergartener’s first official day of traditional school will be Tuesday, September 3, 2019. Staff will be available to help direct you to your child’s classroom and to answer general questions. Please note that due to student enrollment changes during the first 10 days of school, classroom assignments can change based on enrollment needs.
Please let me know if you have any questions and thank you for your partnership and support. I am so excited to meet our little Pandas!!
Warm Regards,
Mrs. Hoke, Principal
