Honeoye Central School District
Monthly Newsletter ~ JUNE 2023
Message from the Superintendent
Dear HCS Families and Community Members,
Hope this note finds you all well as we prepare to say farewell for the summer!
We have officially started the FINAL COUNTDOWN to the 2022-23 school year! The HCS Commencement Ceremony is merely a week away and scheduled for Friday, June 23 at 7:00 in the auditorium. I am nothing less than "wow"ed by our Class of 2023 Seniors... They are a source of tremendous pride to the Honeoye learning community and I look forward to sharing in the celebration of their accomplishment(s) at graduation!
There Is No Place Like Honeoye...
On behalf of the Honeoye Central School District, we would like to take this opportunity to thank the HCS community for its support and partnership during the 2022-23 school year. Huge shout out to the instructional and operational staff at HCS! Our teachers and staff daily model the commitment, fortitude, GRIT and work ethic that our students will one day emulate. As we wrap up the school year, please join me in offering gratitude to all classroom teachers, counselors, psychologists, school nurses, bus drivers, facilities crew, food service staff, clerical and support staff, building and district level administrators and the HCS Board of Education.
Salute to 2023 HCS Retirees
As you are likely aware, we have a few Bulldogs who are beginning the next chapter in the journey of their lives. It is only fitting that we pay honor and tribute to each of our retiring Bulldog Champions. Please join me in congratulating and thanking our 2023 retirees:
Laurie Bailey, ES Enrichment/AIS Teacher (effective October 2023)
Mary Beth Cornish, Grade 6 Teacher
Sandy Culver, Library Teaching Assistant
Mark West, Bus Driver
Shift in Practice: 2023-24 Calendar
- HCS will be moving away from mailing out a multiple page, hard copy calendar for 2023-24.
- In 2023-24 a hard copy of our one page Instructional Calendar (which is already accessible on our website - District, Publications and Reports, Instructional Calendar) will be included in the August mailing for families .
- Note: A "page two" to the Instructional Calendar will be added and included to clearly denote holidays, vacations, testing dates and half days.
New Community Partnerships at HCS
- HCS is proud to welcome Mosaic Health to provide onsite dentistry services for students in 2023-24. Many thanks to our Social Worker, Molly Perrin, for her time and energy to support this new partnership for the district! More information to follow as we prepare to launch the 2023-24 school year!
- Many thanks to Kristin Kester and the Honeoye PTA for working closely with the district to establish a partnership with FoodLink. HCS now hosts a "brick and mortar" pantry onsite which is operated by our PTA organization. As shared by the Honeoye PTA: "We are here to help all families of students and staff of Honeoye Central School." Please reach out via phone 585-229-5171 X1173 if you or someone you know may benefit from this assistance.
- On June 5, HCS was informed that our application to fund Primary Project in the Honeoye Central School District at the elementary school for the 2023-2024 academic school year had been approved. If you are unfamiliar with this program, Primary Project is an evidence-based program that supports students in Pre-K through Grade 3 to adjust to school, develop social skills, and to focus on learning. While Primary Project programming is NOT intended for ALL primary level students, it is an additional targeted support for students who may be demonstrating adjustment difficulties at school, thereby increasing chances for earlier success. We look forward to our partnership with Primary Project at HCS!
- HCS is proud to have launched our Behavior Intervention Team this year. BIT serves as an organized team to discuss "threat Cases" which involve an articulable and significant concern of potential threat to the health or safety of a student or other individuals. BIT utilizes the expertise of the team for the development of intervention and case management strategies for threat cases presented to the team. The HCS Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) is facilitated by the Honeoye Central School District Superintendent and consists of HCS mental health staff, administration, and representatives from numerous Ontario County partners:
Ontario County Mental Health
Ontario County Children and Youth SPOA Coordinator
Children and Youth Outreach Advocate, Lakeview Health Services
Ontario County Child Protective Services (CPS)
Ontario County DSS/PINS Diversion
Ontario County Sheriff’s Office
Finger Lakes Area Counseling and Recovery Agency (FLACRA)
Directional Signage Update
- Great news! The district received the following update from ASI Signage on June 4, 2023: "Your signage is scheduled to complete by 7/28/23."
- We fully anticipate having all directional signage mounted prior to launch of the 2023-24 school year.
TapApp Update
- As I have shared in previous communications, HCS has engaged in contract with TAP App.
- TAP App serves as a panic alarm system for schools (and other organizations). The incorporation of TAP App allows us the ability to instantly and effectively communicate in real time during emergencies from cell phones, iPads, and other mobile devices.
At the time of this writing, TAP App has been installed on all district devices and on many staff member devices. NOTE: Installation on staff member devices is voluntary.
Our building principals coordinated and conducted spring lockdown drills using TapApp (2) and staff feedback has been utilized to troubleshoot the rollout of this panic alarm system.
HCS will "hold the course" with usage of the TAP APP panic alarm system in 2023-24 (and beyond).
District Safety Team and 2023-24 District Emergency Response Plan
- District Safety Team members engaged in review of the District Emergency Response Plan on 5/10. This function of the team is in compliance with NYSED Regulation which requires that the District Emergency Response Plan is monitored and maintained by the District Safety Team and reviewed annually on or before July 1st of each year.
- The 2023-24 Emergency Response Plan will be included on the July BOE meeting agenda, followed by a 30 day public comment period.
- Upon expiration of Public Comment period, the 2023-24 ERP will be recommended to the BOE for adoption during the August BOE meeting.
2023-24 Athletics Update
- Our current Athletic Director, Amiee Levesque, is working to wrap up the process of posting, interviewing and hiring for anticipated coaching vacancies spanning all three seasons in 2023-24.
- The AD will be prepared to make recommendations for BOE approval during the July 12 BOE meeting.
- Thank you to Amiee Levesque for her service in the role of Athletic Director for the 2023-24 school year! The district is thankful for the incredible amount of time and energy Amiee has devoted to this role. Amiee's service in this role concludes June 30.
- Welcome to Mark Pulver, who will serve as Athletic Director for HCS in 2023-24. Mark has been spending a significant amount of time over the last few months preparing to onboard on July 1. Athletes and families may expect an initial communication from Mr. Pulver this summer.
Graduates of Distinction Update
- The Graduates of Distinction Committee assembled the week of April 19 to review and make recommendation for acknowledgement of nominees.
- The district received five nominations and of the five, four met the established criterion for acknowledgement.
- Honorees will be acknowledged formally during Commencement Ceremony on June 23.
- Following acknowledgement on 6/23, nominators and nominees will receive formal notification from District Office that includes details around our plans for public acknowledgement, scheduled for Homecoming Weekend 2023.
- A preliminary meeting specific to the 2023 Welcome Back Bash has already been scheduled and held at HCS!
- Happy to report that the district is "on track" to host our SECOND WWB event on August 31, 2023 from 5:30 - 8:00. See "Save the Date" notice below.

Graduation 2023
From the Desk of HCS Assistant Principal & Data Coordinator, Mr. Akers
Congratulations to all of our students for a successful 2022-2023 school year, especially our graduating seniors! So much work went into the success of our students including their support from you. Before we send everyone off to enjoy, I wanted to share a few fun tips about how to reduce “summer slide” and keep their brains active so they retain all the skills they gained from this year!
The first one is to make time for reading, any type of reading! This is a simple but effective way to keep students of any age’s skills sharp. Summer is a perfect time for picking books of interest, on any topic that your student may like or may otherwise not read during the year. The reading itself is the important part, the what they read should be the fun part! Whether it be reading to younger students or helping find interesting books for older students, it goes a long way to reduce summer slide.
Writing is an important skill that can get neglected during the summer break. Finding different ways to get your student to write can help them keep their writing solid. Having students write letters to family or friends can be a fun way to connect with people they know while practicing writing sentences. For younger students, you can practice writing words and letters in more novel or exciting ways. This could include practicing writing in sand, putting shaving cream on a table and writing with their fingers, or using a paint brush to write things out. There are a number of creative ways to write that you can find online that are fun for your students!
In addition to these tips, having your student try new things like going to a park, traveling to a different area they haven’t been to, or visiting a library or museum can be both fun and a great experience for them that they may not be able to get during a busy school year. With that said, I hope you and your students take some time to unwind, enjoy the summer, and recharge so they are ready to start off the next year strong!

The end of the school year is fast approaching! With that being said, routines are important to our students. Withsummer vacation and free time comes the opportunity to try new things that may affect your child negatively, thus causing bad habits to form. Remind your children to make healthy decisions, and make time to have a conversation with them. Over the summer, I will be available via email if you have any questions or concerns.
On August 31 from 5:30pm-8:00pm, myself and Dr. Dan Oftstein from The Council on Alcoholism and Addictions of the Finger Lakes will be at school for the Honeoye Central School’s 2nd Annual Welcome Back Bash! We hope to see you there!
Have a wonderful summer!

Staying Safe Online this Summer
Summer vacation is almost here! That means no school, more sunny weather to enjoy, and extra chances to have fun online. Whether it be Minecraft, TikTok, or Disney Plus, it is important to keep your child safe in the digital world this summer. Check out the guide below for some top tips such as reporting bad behavior online, making time for other hobbies, and not giving out personal information.
The New York State Seal of Biliteracy (NYSSB)~ Submitted by Madame Hensler
The World Language Department is very proud to recognize the 11 recipients of the NYSSB. The New York State Seal of Biliteracy was established to recognize high school graduates who have attained a high level of proficiency in the three modes of communication (Interpretive, Interpersonal, Presentational) in English and one or more world languages. Students presented projects in French/Spanish and English to a panel. The judges saw lots of passion and hard work. Students showed that they are bilingual and ready to explore the world. A wonderful accomplishment for these 11th and 12th graders. The recipients this year are: Kendra Scheele, Kate Reynolds, Evan Miller, Alexa Colon, Cassidy Clark, Ethan Zuck, Benjamin Battle, McKayla Johnson, Molly Rubadeau, Olivia Dibble and Clare Griffin. Their teachers could not be more proud.

On Thursday, June 1, our senior high band enjoyed great food and camaraderie during their annual awards picnic. Many awards were distributed-everyone received at least one. Congratulations to all!
On June 3, our middle school bands competed in the Six Flags Darien Lake music festival. Congratulations to our 6th grade band and 7th/8th grade band, who both received a rating of outstanding with distinction!
One June 5, our 6-12 bands presented a pops concert. The majority of the selections were taken from movies or TV, with some or the repertoire selected by students. Congratulations to all!
On June 6, our elementary bands and choirs presented their spring concert. This concert marked the debut of our Training Band! Congratulations to all!
On June 7, the music department welcomed the latest members of the Tri-M Music Honor Society!
Honeoye Band-Steps For Summer Success
It is strongly recommended that all brass and woodwind players have their instruments cleaned and serviced at a local music store. Doing so will avoid costly repairs in the future. Two businesses that we use are: Mobile Music on Main Street in Canandaigua (394-0296) and Music and Arts Center in Pittsford (586-2766).
As a musician, you are also an athlete: building strength and endurance in several muscles in your face/hands that help you play your instrument properly. Keep in shape with practice! Practicing a couple times a week will help ensure your skills do not erode over the summer. Here are some ideas on how to keep playing:
1. Play old songs in your lesson book (or old NYSSMA solos) for fun.
2. Sight read new songs in your lesson book for a challenge.
3. Invite a band friend over to play through songs together.
4. Get a “fun” music book for your instrument. There are several books out there with movie themes, TV show songs, jazz tunes, etc. You can get these at the music stores mentioned above or online at JW Pepper or Sheet Music Plus. You can also print out free sheet music online.
5. For students in grades 8-12: Honeoye Community Band meets on Mondays starting on June 26. See below for more information.
6. For students in grades 8-12: Finger Lakes Concert Band meets a few times over the summer at Canandaigua Academy and performs a couple of concerts in Canandaigua and Naples. Email fingerlakescb@gmail.com for more information.
When storing your instrument, keep it in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and humidity.
Have a wonderful, safe, fun, and musical summer!

Learning and Literacy: Alison Farrell, Literacy Coach
Comprehension is Complex… part 3…
So what makes comprehension complex? What are the components that are measured in a comprehension assessment and what strategies do readers use?
The last two newsletters addressed : Thinking Within The Text and Thinking Beyond The Text. This month we will take a closer look at Thinking About The Text.
Thinking About the Text: It is fun and interesting to look closely at a piece of writing, a story book, or informational text and think, “why did the author do that?” A reader can consider the decisions authors make about the genre (fiction, nonfiction, fantasy, realistic fiction etc), what will keep a reader interested, and the organization of a story line or the headings and diagrams he includes. All of these writer “moves” support the reader as they interact with a book.
The reader is called upon to
Consider the Genre - Create expectations for the text based on knowledge of the genre
Critique - Think critically about the text and how it is written
Analyze - Notice aspects of the writer’s craft and text structure
What can you do to support your reader?
As you select books at the library this summer, or dig through your child’s book shelves, talk about the books you choose to read together. What does the author do to make the book funny, interesting, or organized? Does the author use fun or meaningful vocabulary? Does he create interesting characters or build suspense? Can you try reading a new genre? Bringing attention to this under utilized aspect of reading comprehension can go a long way toward supporting thoughtful, strategic reading.
Happy Summer Reading!

From The Desk Of . . . Michael D. Bastian, HCS Business Administrator
June and July are months of transition as we close out one school (fiscal) year and begin another. In late June, the Business Office finalizes current year expenditures and payroll obligations as we prepare for the annual year-end audit in July. July 1st brings a new fiscal year and with it the ordering of instructional supplies for the 2023-2024 school year. During July, the Ontario County and New York State Offices of Real Property Tax provide information to school districts to calculate local municipal tax rates. July is also a time for reporting of prior year expenditures to NY State in a variety of formats. This information is used by NYSED to project state aid for the following year.
Our operational departments (maintenance, transportation and food service) will also experience the transition between fiscal years as they close out one year’s expenditures and begin ordering and preparing for the new school year. Our maintenance staff will be busy cleaning the entire campus from top to bottom while also engaging in small improvement projects both inside and out. Our food service and transportation departments will be engaging in year-end reporting and cleaning. Additionally, the transportation department will be prepping for summer school and extended school year bussing while also developing daily bus routes for the 2023-2024 school year. District-wide, our twelve-month support staff employees take great pride in the important work they do over the summer to prepare the school for a seamless kickoff in early September.
Wishing everyone a fantastic summer! See you back in September.
COME JOIN OUR TEAM! HCS IS A GREAT PLACE TO WORK!
Our facilities and operations departments (Transportation, Food Service and Buildings & Grounds) are currently engaged in efforts to hire both full-time and substitute employees. The HCS Transportation Department is always looking for substitute drivers and monitors and has recently added a posting for substitute (auto/bus) mechanics. Likewise, the Food Service Department is always interested in adding substitute Food Service Helpers.
The HCS Maintenance Department is looking to fill (12 month) positions and is always looking for substitute cleaners. We are looking for one or more cleaners able to work 20-40 hours per week (evening hours). For additional information, visit the Job Opportunities page on the HCS District Website. Civil Service positions require interested parties to apply through the Ontario County HR - Civil Service Vacancies job board.

Social Emotional Wellness and Mental Health Supports and Services at HCS
Intersection of Code of Conduct, DASA and Title IX
HCS Code of Conduct:
- Per SED, the Board of Education of every school district within New York State is required to adopt and amend, as appropriate, a Code of Conduct for the maintenance of order on school property, including a school function, which shall govern the conduct of students, teachers and other school personnel as well as visitors and shall provide for the enforcement thereof.
- Any and all student misconduct may be investigated and enforced under the district’s Code of Conduct. Investigation and enforcement of Code of Conduct violations is the responsibility of building level administration, and may be supported by a Dean of Students and/or other support staff.
- During the Spring of 2022, the HCS administration team invested dedicated time engaging in professional learning specific to student discipline for “higher level” offenses and calibrating responses to such. The Code of Conduct articulates the range of progressive dispositions for offenses, and we are striving for consistency in its application.
- The DASA legislation is intended to provide students with a safe and supportive environment free from discrimination, intimidation, taunting, harassment, and bullying on school property, a school bus and/or at a school function. Please review the above link for more information on DASA.
- Protected classes in the DASA legislation include: race, color, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, religious practice, disability, sexual orientation, gender, and sex.
- Behaviors outlined in DASA are also identified as prohibited student conduct within the HCS Code of Conduct (Section VIII, E4, E5 & E7). As such, any such misconduct may be investigated and enforced under the district’s Code of Conduct.
- Please report any DASA concerns as outlined below:
- Contact your building level administrator. Both Mrs. Pfluke and Mr. Schneckenburger welcome and encourage direct and open lines of communication with students and families.
- Tell a trusted adult, such as any member of the mental health staff or a teacher. School personnel are required to notify an administrator in the event of such a report.
- Complete the HCS Incident Reporting Form. Building principals actively monitor this tool for reports of peer conflict, misconduct, bullying, and/or harassment.
- District appointed DASA Coordinators conduct DASA investigations. Our HCS DASA Coordinators include the following staff members:
- Nate Schneckenburger, Secondary Principal
- Natalie Pfluke, Elementary Principal
- Andrea Johnson, School Psychologist
- Rachael Davis, School Psychologist
- While the DASA Coordinator may conduct the investigation, our building level administrators are responsible for disposition of any "founded" DASA complaint.
- Title IX is a federal law which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex and provides, “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” Please review the above link for more information.
- In August 2020, the U.S. Department of Education adopted new regulations to revise the definition of sexual harassment prohibited under Title IX, and also created new procedures for investigating allegations of sexual harassment covered by Title IX.
- Behaviors outlined in Title IX are also identified as prohibited student conduct within the HCS Code of Conduct (Section VIII, E6). As such, any such misconduct may be investigated and enforced under the district’s Code of Conduct.
- Please note, however, in the event of a report of sexual harassment, the family of a student victim will be contacted by a district appointed Title IX Coordinator to discuss investigation options, time parameters for a formal Title IX investigation, and other considerations (such as confidentiality) of such an investigation.
- In the event a Title IX complaint is filed, the family of the alleged offender will also be contacted by district appointed Title IX Coordinator to discuss the investigation, time parameters and other considerations.
- Our HCS Title IX Coordinators include:
- Natalie Pfluke, Elementary Principal
- Nathan Schneckenburger, Secondary Principal
- Questions about Title IX information may be directed to the individuals named above or to titleixcoordinator@honeoye.org.
- Title IX concerns should be reported as previously outlined above (and reinforced here):
- Contact your building level administrator. Both Mrs. Pfluke and Mr. Schneckenburger welcome and encourage direct and open lines of communication with students and families. As Title IX Investigators, they also are “the lead” in any investigation and/or development of action steps to redress issues.
- Building level administrators are responsible for the disposition of any "founded" Title IX complaint.
Go Guardian and Beacon Alerts
To support student safety and encourage scholarly behaviors when using devices, the Honeoye Central School District incorporated online services provided by GoGuardian a number of years ago. It may be helpful to know that over 10,000 other schools use GoGuardian to protect 5.5 million students across the world, and the Global Educator Institute has endorsed the GoGuardian Teacher product.
How are we using GoGuardian?
- HCS has chosen GoGuardian Beacon and GoGuardian Teacher services to:
- Help protect students against harmful and inappropriate online material
- Help students stay “scholarly” and more focused when learning online
- Help assess students’ progress towards class assignments
When and how does GoGuardian operate?
- GoGuardian’s web-based services operate on our school’s managed G Suite for Education Chrome accounts (i.e. when a student is logged into Chrome or a Chromebook with his/her school email address).
- GoGuardian Teacher enables teachers to use GoGuardian Teacher with students in their classes only during school hours from Monday through Friday.
- GoGuardian Beacon enables the district to monitor student usage 24/7. When Beacon detects that a student is browsing content related to Self-Harm or Suicide, a notification will be sent to users in order of the Escalation List up to five times or until an action is taken on the alert card. Disclaimer: Regardless of school monitoring specific to reference of self harm, it is simply not possible to catch all activity. Parents maintain responsibility to supervise their children’s use of devices.
What are the school’s responsibilities?
- HCS selected GoGuardian services to help our students stay safer and more scholarly online. We will work with students during class time to help teach them digital responsibility and safety. Additionally, we will train teachers about how to operate GoGuardian and about our policies and procedures to help protect student privacy.
What are my parental/guardian and child’s responsibilities?
- We ask that students uses their school-managed Google accounts and school-managed devices for educational purposes within the boundaries of the HCS Acceptable Use Policy and Agreement.
- When a student is off campus, parents are responsible for supervising internet access and usage. We encourage you to discuss rules for appropriate internet usage with your child, and to reinforce lessons of digital citizenship and safety with him or her. We also highly encourage you to report any potential cyberbullying or other sensitive issues to us.
How does GoGuardian help protect my child’s privacy?
- To help your child remain scholarly and safe online, GoGuardian collects certain personally identifiable information about your child.
- GoGuardian has consulted with privacy experts, participates in privacy organizations, is a proud signatory of the Student Privacy Pledge, and has been awarded certifications by iKeepSafe for complying with both the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act and California student privacy laws. For more detailed information about GoGuardian, you may visit GoGuardian’s website, Trust & Privacy Center, GoGuardian’s Product Privacy Policy, and the attached COPPA Notice and Disclosure Form.
