Yet another week in the books and finally a well deserved break for all!
Nice weather is on the way for next week, so let’s hope that that cooperates for us all.
A lot is going on after vacation, including our new state mandated VT-CAP test that will be taken by all students grades 5-8 starting the first week in May. A family letter will follow with exact dates and test module dates.
Also, after getting the proper approval, we will be taking students at BFMS to a NH Fisher Cats game on May 31st. More details to follow! We are really excited about offering all students this opportunity!

5th Grade News
This week 5th graders have been working on following behavior goals to earn an incentive. Students have been doing a great job and working hard!
In science, students have finished presenting their ecosystems projects. We will begin learning about Earth's systems after the break.
In math, we have started to review for the CAP Testing in May and are becoming familiar with the tools and types of questions that students will see on the test.
In ELA, students have started to work on their bobble head biography research activity. They will be researching a famous figure as well as creating a bobblehead of that individual. After all research has been completed, they will present their findings to their classmates. Students are working hard to gain a greater understanding of paraphrasing as they prepare to locate information on their project.
Last week, they shared the Reader's Theatre skits they created with students in their advisory. I am so proud of the work they did with these skits. Many of them are excited to work on another skit in the future. After the break, we will begin to look at practice questions associated with our new standardized test, the VT CAP.
6th Grade News
90% of the 6th grade earned the March/April incentive for following directions/rules, putting effort into and completing work, and being cooperative in the classroom. We went to the Springfield Rec Center for bowling, foosball, skeeball, pool, and a variety of gym activities.
7th Grade News
In 7th grade math, students are wrapping up their unit on equations and inequalities by solving 2-Step inequalities. Students have really thrived in this unit and are well prepared for pre-algebra and algebra next year! Additionally, we are dedicating time to reviewing the long-division process using decimal dividends and divisors.
8th Grade News
We have been studying Biomimicry.
They have just completed a project wherein they described a particular animal adaptation and
how we humans have hacked that trait for medicine, technology, sports etc.
Social Studies
We are starting to explore the origins and effects, both short and long term, of the Great Depression. We are also familiarizing ourselves with and weighing in on select current events in our nation.
ELA
We learned about the differences between active and passive voice. We have analyzed their use in sample texts and used both in our writing. We also spent time continuing our media and news literacy studies using the Checkology program. This week students learned how journalists use key criteria to filter information and determine which events and issues to cover in a given news cycle.
8th Grade News -Turning Point
Dear 8th Grade Families,
We are excited to announce that we are partnering with Turning Point to bring Taysa Lynch, a recovery coach to speak with our 8th grade class on April 18, 2023 at 9:45. Taysha and her daughter will share their personal story of substance use, recovery and prevention.
Taysa found a love for prevention through her work in developing, launching and coordinating a Peer Based, Youth Leadership Program for Turning Point of Springfield, VT. She has seen first-hand the need and benefits of prevention, specifically in our youth. She also works in the field of recovery as a Certified Addiction Counselor since 2016 and is currently working diligently to obtain her Certification as Prevention Specialist.
We will have counseling staff on hand for after the presentation if students are needing additional support to process the information.
If you have any questions or concerns please reach out to me. If you would like to have your child opt out of this discussion please email me at keri.newton@wnesu.com
