8th Grade
MATH:
In math, we have started our Functions unit. In this unit, students will learn how to:
Define a function in terms of input and output and determine input output values for a given table, equation, verbal description, or linear graph.
Represent and compare functions in multiple ways.
Connect the definition of a function to other representations, such as a graph, table, equation, or verbal description.
Identify a function as linear or nonlinear given a verbal description, table of values, graph, or equation.
Identify key features of a graph of a linear or nonlinear function.
Sketch a graph, given the verbal description of a functional relationship, and determine if the relationship is linear or nonlinear.
ALGEBRA:
Chapters 5 and 7 provide an opportunity for students to learn more about the family of exponential functions. They will also build more advanced algebraic skills, such as solving for an indicated variable, simplifying or rewriting exponential expressions, working with fractional exponents, and finding the exponential function that passes exactly through any pair of given points. Students will also learn about several important applications of exponential functions.
LITERACY:
Students have just started a unit on culture and belonging which focuses on how a person develops their own identity within a new culture or situation. Students will practice finding the main idea of a text, plot elements, characterization, and learn about the elements of a documentary.
DUAL LITERACY:.
Since returning from break we have begun working our unit The Walk Toward Freedom. In this unit we have been learning and reading about the women’s rights movement. We will also analyze and read speeches from a few women who played a key role in the movement. Students will begin working on a research presentation in the coming weeks.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Students will be investigating the events and people surrounding America’s role in becoming a superpower in the world. They will also be learning about the theme of WWI being MAIN (Militarism, Alliance System Imperialism, Nationalism) which were the leading causes of European countries moving toward war. As we close out the unit students will discover the events surrounding the increase of US influence on the outcome of the war and shaping the postwar world.
SCIENCE:
We continue to review balancing chemical equations as we begin our next topic of study; solutions, acids & bases. Students will work to identify the differences between an acid and a base, while also pinpointing the location of a variety of items on the PH scale. We also continue our current science project menu, which will be due on 1/31.
DUAL SCIENCE:
We continue to explore how the Periodic Table of Elements is organized as well as the properties of each of the main periods and families. In addition, we are learning how to interpret the information provided in each elements’ square and are utilizing those data points to help us construct Bohr and Lewis models of various elements. We will also work on balancing chemical equations. And then, we will wrap up this unit with an activity in which they will make a poster about an element; putting together all they have learned.
READ180:
We are finishing Workshop 8. Our argument essay was due this week. Student pretended they were asked to write an article about managing money for the school newspaper. The class will be completing the end of workshop project and taking the assessment next week.
News from the Library with Mrs McCoy and Mrs White!
Graphic novels have become some of the most popular books in the Creekside Library.
Graphic novels are books that use both illustrations and words to tell a story. They come in many diverse genres and are great for even the most reluctant readers. For a long time, graphic novels were considered as the inferior form of literature, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, they help foster a love of reading and the presence of illustrations helps aid visual and verbal literacy. - Markam Public Library.New Kid
