"Freezin for a Reason" - Polar Plunge - Saturday (2/4/23)
On February 4, 2023, FAPS will have representatives jumping into Lake Fenton in the annual Polar Plunge Event at the Fenton Moose Lodge, 2245 Sonora Drive, Fenton at 1:00 p.m. Funds raised, help student-athletes compete in the Special Olympics, and help to provide equipment, uniforms, transportation, and so much more.
Families that would like to support this cause may contribute to our FAPS Team Page, or choose an individual on the team and pledge in his/her name. A little friendly competition will help drive our numbers.
FAPS staff who are signed up to take the plunge are Mr. Bakker, Mr. Bradley, Mrs. Moore, Mrs. Smelis, Mr. Smith, Mrs. Tyrrell, Mr. Uhrik, Mr. Salter (Tomek-Eastern), Mr. Simmerman (FAPS).

The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) Exam/Career Exploration Program can help you to take steps now toward finding a career that is right for you. You can benefit from the exam regardless of your plans for after high school. It will be given during 1st, 2nd & 3rd hours on Wednesday, February 22nd. Booklets about the ASVAB are available in the FHS Counseling Office.
If you are in grades 10 - 12 and you are interested in taking advantage of this exclusive career exploration, please sign up in the Counseling Office by Thursday, February 16th. If you are unable to come in and sign up for it, please let Mrs. Stapp know and she will be happy to put your name on the list.
Ambassadors (Show Choir) Auditions - 2/28, 3/1, and 3/2/23
Can you sing? Can you dance? Do you like to perform? How would you like to audition for the Fenton High School Ambassadors, a high energy, dynamic singing and dancing show choir?
Entrance into the group is through a thorough audition process that includes a written application, a vocal audition, and 2 teacher recommendations. Audition applications are available in the AGS & FHS Main Offices and can be turned in to Mr. Wright at Fenton High School.
What To Do:
1. Pick up an application from AGS or FHS Main Office (available Week of Jan 30th).
2. Obtain 2 teacher recommendations.
3. Prepare a pop/jazz song to sing (see #4 for more info).
4. Select and sign-up for an audition time slot - sign up list in FHS Main Office. Time slots are as follows:
- Tuesday - 2/28/23 beginning at 3:00 p.m. in FHS Choir Room
- Wednesday - 3/1/23 beginning at 3:00 p.m. in FHS Choir Room
- Thursday - 3/2/23 beginning at 3:00 p.m. in FHS Choir Room.

Application Courses
Students wanting to be enrolled in classes such as Honors World History, Honors American Studies, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and some elective courses must make application to these courses and meet any/all criteria provided on the application. Applications available at link below.
Audition Courses
Some classes, such as certain instrumental & vocal music classes may require students to schedule an "audition" in order to be considered for acceptance to the class. Audition window is 1/23 to 2/16/23 (except for Show Choir (aka Ambassadors' - see separate graphic).

23-24 Genesee Career Institute - 1st Year Applicants - Deadline for Application - 2/16/23
GCI courses are open to any Fenton High School (FHS) student who will meet junior or senior standing by the start of the 2023-24 school year.
The FHS Counseling Department has created a Google Classroom titled "2023-24 GCI Enrollment Info for 1st Year Applicants," and you may NOW join this Classroom with code o4rnpr3 .
Included in this Classroom is important information and resources to assist students (and parents) in making a decision about applying to and attending GCI. Furthermore, the official "2023-24 GCI Application" (Google Form) is housed in this Classroom.
If you have any interest in applying to GCI for the 2023-24 school year, then please join this Google Classroom. The deadline to complete/submit the 2023-24 GCI Application is Thursday, February 16th!
Semester Grades, Transcripts & Attendance Appeal Results
Students who did not return an Attendance Appeal, did not earn a C+ or better on the semester exam, or did not have his/her appeal granted (36 in total), were mailed an Attendance Plan on 1/27/23. This PLAN is a 9-10 week PLAN to improve attendance (see conditions in the PLAN) in order to have "credit on hold" re-awarded.
Note: Be advised, any credit placed on hold may not count towards the 5 out of 7 credits required for athletic eligibility for the 3rd marking period.
Reminders
- Call by NOON the day after an absence to excuse it.
- Use Parent Drop Off - Do not drop students in other lots.
- Door Dash, or any other food delivery, is NOT permitted.
- Call early for a dismissals, so passes can be issued early in the day to students.
- All students should CHECK OUT in the Main Office.
- Student vehicles MUST be registered to park on campus. Students are NOT allowed to go to vehicles during the school day.
- Closed Campus - students are NOT to leave campus without administrative permission.
- Math Lab - Every 4th hour & lunch for any student.
- After School Tutoring - Mon thru Thursday from 2:40 to 3:40 p.m. Permission slip below

Traffic Safety Reminders
All drivers are reminded that the loop to the south of the high school where the Main Entrance is located is reserved each morning (7:00-7:45 a.m.) and afternoon (2:15 to 2:45 p.m.) for school buses only.
Anyone dropping off or picking up students should use the Parent loop accessible from Donaldson Drive. Those who are dropping off or picking up students in the Parent loop should follow signage provided to keep traffic moving. Parking lots should NOT be used for student pick-up/drop off.
Please follow these traffic procedures to ensure the safety of all FHS students and staff.
Athletics & Activities
Student Council Dance - Saturday, February 11th - 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Tickets will be on sale: Monday (1/23/23) through Friday (2/3/23) at both lunches.
Historically, February snow days and low ticket sales have resulted in the dance being cancelled. Consequently, after school on January 31st, IF ticket sales cannot cover the cost of the DJ, it will be cancelled and refunds given.

Athlete of the Week
1. Caden Crandall - Hockey: Caden is the Alternate Captain and a great leader. This past week, he posted back-to-back hat tricks, scoring 4 goals in each game, for a total of 11 points in two wins for the Griffins.
2. Libby Pattan - Competitive Cheer: Junior, Libby Pattan, is a 3 round athlete for Fenton. Libby had incredible performances in all three rounds, allowing the Tigers to earn another 3rd place win at the 2nd Flint Metro League Meet. In round 3, Libby contributes 4 one leg extensions, 4 360 twists or full up, and 2 back tucks to the team's choreography.
3. Jillian Shanahan: Gymnastics: Jillian is a junior at FHS. She always gives 100% in her efforts at practice and at meets. She works consistently and sets her goals to not only do better for herself, but for her team. This past Saturday, Jilian's team competed at the largest invitational in the State of Michigan. Jilliam competed on all 4 events contributing to her team's total on every event scoring an 8.35 on vault, 7.75 on bar, 8.225 on beam, and 8.7 on floor.

2022-23 MHSAA Scholar-Athlete Finalists Annouced
The 120 finalists for the Michigan High School Athletic Association's Scholar-Athlete Awards for the 2022-23 school year, presented by Farm Bureau Insurance, have been announced.
This year, 1,440 applications were received. All applicants will be presented with certificates commemorating their achievement. The applications were judged by a 65-member committee of school coaches, counselors, faculty members, administrators and board members from MHSAA member schools. Class A scholarship recipients will be announced Feb. 21.
To be eligible for the award, students must :
- Have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 (on a 4.0 scale) and
- Previously have won a varsity letter in at least one sport which MHSAA has a postseason tournament.
- Respond to a series of short essay questions,
- Submit two letters of recommendation
- Write a 500-word essay on the importance of sportsmanship in educational athletics.

Fenton Tigers at Little Caesar's Arena
The Fenton High School girls and boys varsity basketball teams played at Little Caesars Arena on Wednesday, 2/1/2023 against Linden HS!
Unfortunately, the Detroit Pistons, who everyone was hoping to see afterwards, were stranded in Texas due to the ice storm there.

GO Scholarship - Class of 2023
The Genesee Opportunity (GO) stipend provides Genesee County high school graduates with money for college, career training, or certification licensing fees.
To be eligible:
- You must reside in Genesee County, Michigan or on a property that is taxed by a Genesee County school district and,
- Be a graduate, from a high school in Genesee County.
- Graduates must be enrolled in an eligible training program or post-secondary educational institution and submit an application by the due date.
- The GO stipend can only be awarded one time and must be used within the first 12 months after graduation or GED completion.
- The GO stipend is not based on income or grades, and is funded through a millage approved by Genesee County voters.
Once the completed application is received, Genesee Opportunity staff will verify the information provided to determine eligibility for the GO Stipend.
Class of 2023 - Michigan Achievement Scholarship
Starting with the high school Class of 2023, students will be eligible for more financial aid from the State, up to:
- Up to $2,750 if they attend a community college, per year
- Up to $5,500 if they attend a public university, per year
- Up to $4,000 if they attend a private college or university, per year
Students will be eligible if their family demonstrates financial need* when they complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
*Financial need is defined as an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) of $25,000 or less.
Things High School Seniors can do right now to prepare:
- File the (FAFSA) ONLY 58 of the 278 seniors/parents have done so!!!
- Create a MiSSG Student Portal three to five business days after filing your FAFSA.

Paul Yunker Memorial Swim/Dive Scholarship
The Paul W. Yunker Memorial Scholarship offers a scholarship of $2,000.00 to a competitive
swimmer or diver from the Greater Flint, MI area. It is to be awarded annually to a high school
swimmer or diver who fulfills the requirements outlined in the application and best demonstrates the characteristics and qualities that Mr. Yunker embodied and lived by.

Girls Who Code - Apply by 2/15 (priority consideration) or 3/24/23
Girls Who Code Free Virtual Summer Programs
All current 9-12th graders who identify as girls or non-binary are eligible to apply, including students with any coding experience level and even past participants.
- In addition to our free programs, we offer a financial support grant of up to $300 and laptop and hotspot access for eligible students.
- This year features brand new added curriculum in game design or data science! As they build computer science skills, students will learn about the many diverse careers in tech through virtual events with professionals in the field.
- We provide the virtual teaching team, a supportive sisterhood through our global network of alumni, and lifelong college and career support.
- Students receive priority consideration if they apply by February 15, 2023. Regular-decision applications are due by March 24, 2023.
Level up by becoming a coder this summer with Girls Who Code ! Choose your own adventure through our two free virtual programs and get the skills, network, and lifelong college and career support you need to change the world. All high school girls and non-binary students are welcome to apply, including past participants!
- In our 2-week Summer Immersion Program for current 9th-11th graders, you’ll join live virtual classrooms hosted by industry-leading companies like MetLife, Bank of America, and Accenture. By the end of the program, you’ll learn the fundamentals of game design, UX, the iterative design process, and more, as you build out a suite of short games using p5.js, a JavaScript library for creative coding. You can even apply for laptop and hotspot access and grants of $300 for financial support!
- In our 6-week Self-Paced Program for current 9th-12th graders, you’ll learn to code through independent study and real-world projects. By the end of the program, you’ll earn beginner-level certificates of completion in HTML, CSS, or JavaScript for web development or intermediate-level certificates of completion in Python for cybersecurity or data science.

After getting your schedule online via Parent/Student Vue, ALL FHS students should go into the Google Classroom and enter the "Class Codes" for the correct hour and class taught by his/her teachers.
To "join" the Google Classroom for all of your classes follow these three steps:
1. Check your FHS gmail for a Google Classroom invite from your teacher.
2. If there is no invite, log into Google Classroom to see if the classroom is there to JOIN. You are looking for a JOIN code.
3. Email your teacher (ex. jane doe = jdoe@fentonschools.org). You can find the first initial of your teacher's first name on your schedule.
Note: Parents can also JOIN a class in Google Classroom to view grades, assignments, handouts, etc.

- Quarantine at home for five days.
- May return to school, if symptoms have resolved, wearing a mask for Days 6-10.
Symptoms include:
Temperature 100.4 or signs of fever (chills/sweating)
Sore throat
New uncontrolled cough that causes difficulty breathing
Diarrhea, vomiting, or abdominal pain
New onset of severe headache
New loss of taste or smell
Congestion or runny nose (more than usual)

FHS & Easter Seals
FHS has partnered with Easterseals of Michigan. Easterseals offers school-based therapy with an onsite clinician 5 days per week including:
- Individual, family & group therapy utilizing evidence-based interventions.
- Specialized training & support services for parents & teachers
- Connections to numerous community resources
- Less time missed at work/school
- Fewer transportation conflicts
- Students can make appointments when convenient (avoiding test days, etc.)
