Each June, LGBTQ folk and their allies take to the street for Pride Parades, honoring the 1969 Stonewall rebellion in Manhattan, considered by many to be the birth of the modern LGBTQ movement. That evening, when drag queens of color took to the streets to confront police with raucous showgirl kicklines, launched a new era of advocacy, education, and empowerment. June is also GLBT Book Month™, a nationwide celebration of the authors and writings that reflect the GLBT experience.

How We Doing?

Each year, we send out the SALS System Use and Satisfaction survey to collect feedback on how we are meeting the needs of our member libraries, and to determine what services have been used in the past year. We ask that all libraries complete the survey no later than June 21, 2018.


The SALS staff and Board of trustees will use the information to create the 2019 budget and to begin to prioritize services starting in July of this year. Thanks to everyone for your time!

Sweet Smell of Success

Leah LaFera of Ulster Soaps led an Etsy Success Workshop at the Schuylerville Public Library as part of the Libraries Mean Business initiative. The packed class enjoyed learning tips and tricks to set up and drive traffic to their online stores.

We Live Here Now

Crandall Public Library is one of fourteen sites nationwide chosen to display Explore Earth: Our Changing Planet, a national traveling exhibition exploring a global view of our changing environment, from June 2 to July 27, 2018. The exhibition will be accompanied by a series of programs and events for all ages, from The Impact of Climate Change on Human Health with Dr. Jay Lemery to Nitty Gritty Planet Earth with the Dirtmeister. Explore Earth: Our Changing Planet was organized by Space Science Institute’s National Center for Interactive Learning, the American Library Association Public Programs Office, the Lunar and Planetary Institute and the Afterschool Alliance. This project was made possible through the support of a grant from the National Science Foundation.

Congratulations Mechanicville District Public Library!

The Mechanicville District Public Library took home the 2017 SALS's Library Program of the Year award. Last year, Director Michelle Duell launched a Farmer's Market on the library's front lawn, across the parking lot from the Senior Center and the city's food pantry. Not content with providing a place for local farms to sell their wares, she partnered with the police department to install raised beds, where the library grew produce to share with the food pantry. The Farmer's Market opened for the 2018 season on Monday, June 4. See you at the market!

Passport to the World

The Cambridge Public Library hosted 50 kindergarteners from Cambridge Central School Kindergarteners at the library. They made bookmarks, and listened to a story about kindness! Each child left with a new book from our book sale room and a library cards. There are now 50 children in Cambridge who hold a passport to a world of limitless possibilities.

Librarian Wanted

The Schuylerville Public Library, awarded 3-stars by Library Journal, is hiring a full-time librarian.


This full-time position requires strong customer service skills, understanding and ability to work with people of all ages, with an emphasis on computer literacy and technology instruction. This position is supervised by the Library Director.


Responsibilities include: Group instruction, individual training, makerspace design, and development of coding programs for a range of ages. Other job duties include: reference, circulation, outreach, readers advisory, research instruction, and collection development. Some supervision over support staff and volunteers may be assigned.


Requirements: An accredited Master’s degree in Library Science is required as well as New York State Public Librarian Certification. Experience in technology instruction and makerspace concepts as well as fluency in Office programs is preferred. A true commitment to excellent patron and public service in a contemporary library setting is a must. Familiarity with Polaris automation software is a plus.


The successful candidate will work 40 hours per week, with a schedule consisting of day, evening and weekend shifts. Benefits include New York State Retirement, health insurance, and paid time off. This is a Civil Service position, therefore appointments will be made based on Saratoga County requirements. Salary range is $35,000-$39,000, based on experience.

Interested in learning to innovate, collaborate and lead? Take part in the Connecticut Library's EXCITE Transformation for Libraries program, an intensive team-based experiential learning program that will teach collaboration and innovation skills, result in programs and services that respond to community input and demonstrated needs, lead to cultural change at libraries, and sustain project impact through extended training.


The learning is led by Jeanine Esposito from Innovation Builders, an organization with experience guiding organizations such as PepsiCo, United Health, and several public libraries to innovate new products and services and transform ways of doing business.

Would you like an opportunity to honor an active library supporter, Friend or Friends of the Library? The Daniel W. Casey Library Advocacy Award is sponsored by the Friends of Libraries Section of NYLA. Given annually since 1993, the award honors a volunteer member or group from the library community whose efforts have contributed to the growth of libraries or Friends of the Library organizations.


The deadline for this award is July 1, 2018. This year’s award recipient will be announced at the FLS annual meeting in Rochester on Friday, November 9th at the NYLA Annual Conference.


Nominations must include all relevant information as per the application form. Make sure to describe the contribution of nominee (group or individual) to library service in detail; such as positions held, years of service, accomplishments, successful fundraisers, etc.

The Friends of Libraries Section is pleased to participate in NYLA’s Dewey Fellowship Award program. Each year, four Sections of NYLA are eligible to select a NYLA member to attend the Annual Conference, all expenses paid. The award is underwritten by the Lake Placid Foundation and will be awarded by FLS every other year. One Section nominee will be chosen. The recommended candidate’s application is ultimately reviewed by the NYLA Awards Committee. The fellowship award is then approved by NYLA Council.


The FLS Dewey Fellowship Award will pay a maximum of $1,000 of the cost to attend the 2018 NYLA Annual Conference is November 7 - 10 in Rochester. Reimbursements include registration, a pre-conference continuing education seminar, tickets for various meal functions, lodging, and travel.


Applicants must file a completed application (Word Document) by 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, 2018. Shubert Library Excellence Award

Michael Stoller, Chair of the New York State Regents Advisory Council on Libraries, announced today that applications are being accepted for the Joseph F. Shubert Library Excellence Award and will be due on August 1, 2018. The 2018 Award Committee members are Colleen Sadowski (Chair), Emily Eich and Juan Rivera.


The Award will recognize a New York State library or library consortium that has taken significant steps to improve the quality of library service to its users. As in past years, an award of $1,000, graciously donated by the Friends of the New York State Library, will be given to the winner along with a plaque at the annual New York Library Association conference in the Fall.


Projects nominated for the Award should document measurable progress in identifying user needs, taking steps to meet those needs, and evaluating the results. All types of libraries are eligible to apply (academic, public, school and special). Previous applicants are encouraged to apply, and previous winners of the Award may apply after 3 years.

Making Space for Active Learning in Your Library

How to Give a Laughter-as-Therapy Program in Your Library
