Showcase a School
Halmstad Elementary
Jerim DesJarlais, Halmstad Principal, presented about Conscious Discipline. Several teachers at Halmstad implemented conscious discipline into their classrooms this past school year to help students improve their self-regulation skills. Teachers focused on bringing calm corners to their classrooms. Mrs. Papierniak, a 3rd grade teacher, said, “Since implementing a calm corner, I have seen a significant improvement of students’ ability to self-regulate and get back on track… Often students would comment how much better they felt after having a moment to regroup.” Mrs. Bjornson, a Special Education teacher, stated, “Calm corners remove the stigma that taking a break is positive, rather than punitive.” In 2023-24, all elementary schools will work to implement conscious discipline in their buildings; click here for a copy of the presentation.
Recognition of 2022-2023 Athletic, Co-Curricular, and Extracurricular Activities
Mike Thompson, Chi-Hi Activities Director, presented a slideshow to highlight the 2022-2023 Athletic, Co-Curricular, and Extracurricular Activities for the fall, winter, and spring seasons. Chi-Hi had several state tournament appearances this year including equestrian (9-Time WIHA Division A STate Champs), volleyball, women’s swim, gymnastics, bowling, track and field, art club, wire choir, FBLA, forensics, and FFA; click here for a copy of the presentation.

Standardized Testing Update
Donna Goodman, Chi-Hi Principal, and Scott Marty, Director of Educational Technology provided an update on standardized testing that occurred at the high school this past spring. They emphasized the logistical issues associated with providing those State-mandated assessments in relation to the value we locally find in them. Stay tuned for more information in the months to come.
Facilities Update
Jeff Holmes, Superintendent of Schools, and Chad Trowbridge, Executive Director of Business Services and Finance, provided an update on the district's facilities, including a temporary solution to Jim Falls and Hillcrest's lack of air conditioning; there are several ideas being floated to consider and, at this juncture, administrators are focusing on finding ways to create opportunities for parity across the District where learning environments are concerned. Additionally, Dave Czech, Board President, provided an update on the Booster Club's fitness center project and fundraising efforts.
Strategic Planning Update
Jeff Holmes, Superintendent of Schools, provided an update on the formulation of the 2023-2026 Strategic Plan - the work has provided staff with an opportunity to revisit and appropriately revamp the guided efforts of the District to deliver quality educational services. The 2023-2026 Strategic Plan will be brought to the Board for consideration at their July regular Board meeting.
State Budget Update
Chad Trowbridge, Executive Director of Business Services and Finance, provided an update on the proposed state budget. The main takeaway at this point: The State’s biennial budget provides replacement for federal COVID-19 dollars, but does little to address inflationary increases. This means that the District will need to continue to find ways to offset the rising costs of goods, utilities, and services.
*Please note that the above information is provided pending the approval of Board minutes at their next regularly scheduled meeting.
