How Do You Spell Success? A&M Consolidated High School Spells It C-E-P!
If your chapter hasn’t had the opportunity to take advantage of SkillsUSA’s Chapter Excellence Program, then the success at one local high school will certainly convince you that this is the time to get connected to CEP!
The SkillsUSA chapter at A&M Consolidated High School was awarded first place in the “workplace skills” category for the 2017 SkillsUSA Models of Excellence (MOE) program. This chapter in College Station, Texas, is a two-time MOE winner, capturing top honors in the “technical skills” category in 2016.
“Being named a national winner back-to-back among so many outstanding programs is an honor,” said chapter advisor Bart Taylor. “The work of our chapter is a great example of what happens when you turn innovation and leadership over to the students. We approach the SkillsUSA Framework as a purposeful guide to strengthening student engagement."
The Models of Excellence program, as part of the CEP, is supported by Lowe’s to promote SkillsUSA Framework application of personal, workplace and technical skills in chapter activities. A&M Consolidated was one of 24 national finalists to compete for this distinction during the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference. Each chapter finalist receives a grant of up to $4,000 from Lowe’s to support SkillsUSA programming.
Taylor and members Kelly Krenek and Delphine Leoue Ngoko Djomo represented the chapter at the national conference. “Since becoming involved in CEP three years ago, I have seen a transformation in how my students learn and apply skills in our technology program and chapter,” Taylor said. “I am proud of them and appreciate Lowe’s for making this program possible.”
The A&M Consolidated chapter topped the workplace skills category for its innovative cybersecurity awareness initiative. Students capitalized on the framework skills of communication, leadership, and planning, organizing and management by augmenting their own cybersecurity knowledge while also spearheading educational outreach in the community. Members participated in an online cybersecurity program and facilitated two cybersecurity education events, one at their local Lowe’s store and one at their high school, to teach others about current online threats and how to keep data safe.
Members honed communication skills by making presentations to various groups and marketing the program. Leadership was demonstrated by student ingenuity and a proactive approach to cybersecurity issues as well as competencies in relationship-building and effective consultation. Extensive planning, organizing and management were required throughout this project. Students took charge of all facets of the program, including planning and oversight, advertising and implementation.
