International Walk and Roll to School Day, Wednesday, October 4th
Lawrence Elementary is once again excited to celebrate and host International Walk and Roll to School Day on Wednesday, October 4th! We will celebrate our school spirit, our health, and the environment with the Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools program. With your family and friends, you can participate by walking, riding a bike, or riding a scooter to school. Or you can take the bus with your child and walk from there, or even park in the surrounding neighborhoods and walk with a group of friends to make a walking school bus! Once you enter campus, come on by the "Walk and Roll" table set up by the Science Lab for your Labrador to indicate with a sticker how they got to school that morning. If you'd like to help volunteer at the table that morning, please sign up here!
Will you walk with your neighbors? Will you park off of Royal Rd. and Briarwood Dr. to cross Portola and say "Good Morning" to Phyllis, our awesome crossing guard? Make a plan ahead with your friends and family and have fun walking and rolling!
Post an action shot on social media to celebrate the day and tag #WalkandRoll23 and #IWR2SD if you'd like!
Extra Yarn-Tree Sweaters
Your PTO has teamed up with our very own school librarian Mrs. Groesbeck to bring our first ever fiber art installation to campus. We were inspired by the the Caldecott winning children’s book, “Extra Yarn” by Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen. In this charming tale, a girl is gifted a “magic box” of yarn that she uses to transform her community through kindness. The more she gives, the more she has to share, bringing color and whimsey to her whole town.
Throughout the next couple of weeks, Mrs. Groesbeck will be reading the story to all classes and she is planning to make a recording soon for our entire Labrador community to enjoy. Most of the yarn and materials used in the project have been donated by our amazing community! The tree sweaters will remain up through Nov 17, after that they will be donated to a non-profit organization chosen by students. Be sure to check out the Downtown Livermore Tree Sweater effort going up this Saturday thru Nov.19 on 1st street, while not affiliated with the group we are also inspired by their talents!
If you would like to see more acts of kindness, you are welcome to participate by donating any “extra yarn” you may have stashed away to the Basket in the Library (available Monday Morning). We will be setting up a new spot in the Maker Space for yarn and access to iPads linked to Hand Knitting tutorials like this one: https://youtu.be/_rjrRZmrsRg?si=tRjbiq2BBtWNWu8j. Feel free to practice at home! We hope to inspire students to experience: sensory texture, color relationships, form, and whimsey as well as empower them to create Acts of Service by making items for others with these new skills.
