Platinum (Pt) is a solid metal located in the transition metals. It is made up of 78 protons and has a mass of approximately 195. It is in period 6 and group 10.

Because platinum is so hard, it makes as a good base for a lot of laboratory equipment. It's really expensive though, so it's not used for mostly everyday tools like beakers and scales.
Jewelry
More precious than gold, platinum makes for good jewelry too. In ancient Egypt the empowers and empresses would use platinum to make their jewelry and were often buried with it, although it wasn't recognized as a precious metal until the 1700s.
Electrical Contacts
Electrical Contacts used in engineering and construction also have use for the strength of platinum. It is often used to hold things together or create electric sparks.
