Super exciting news from the Speech and Debate Team!! Friday, February 14th was the West Iowa National Qualifying tournament for the National Speech and Debate Association National Tournament. The National Debate & Speech Tournament has been held across the country since 1931, and today is the largest academic competition in the world. Each year, more than 4,500 high school students compete in a week-long competition to claim the prestigious title of National Champion within each division. The top 3% of all students in the NSDA qualify for the National Speech and Debate tournament who according to the NSDA “represent the best and brightest young people across the United State and the globe.” After multiple rounds of competition, students had to be in the TOP TWO in their category in West Iowa to be a National Qualifier. The results:
Max Braunstein and Caleb Baker will be going to Nationals in Duo Interpretation (a 10 minute memorized acting category from a script)!
Jacob Licht and Claire Hendrich will also be going to Nationals in Duo Interpretation!! This means that Sioux City East took both spots in Duo Interpretation!!!
Carter Vanderloo will be going to Nationals in Program of Oral Interpretation (a 10 minute category with pieces of prose and poetry thematically-linked together)!
Leai Britton will be going to Nationals in Dramatic Interpretation (a 10 minute memorized acting category from a dramatic script)!
Whitney Lester will be going to Nationals in Humorous Interpretation (a 10 minute memorized acting category from a humorous script)!
Annabelle Helms will be going to Nationals in Informative Speaking (a 10 minute memorized self-written structured speech with visual aids)!
Congratulations to Janaya Barnes who is 2nd alternate in Humorous Interpretation!
On March 21st, more students will have the chance to go to Nationals after Congress Qualifiers and the decision on who will be on the Worlds Team.
Please help us in congratulating these students on all of their hard work and this INCREDIBLE accomplishment!

East High is collecting Hy-Vee receipts in the main office for Hy-Vee Cash 4 Students. Please drop off your receipts dated from August 1st to present. Hy-Vee will donate a percentage back to East High for every dollar spent.
Students that are in need of Food 4 Thought bags can head down to Office 107 at the end of the day on the last school day of the week. These bags are for home use, if opened at school students will no longer be allowed to receive one.
Students, as you may have noticed there are signs on the doors reminding you to not let anyone in the school. Due to recent events we would really like for visitors and students to ring the doorbell to get in the building. If we all follow this protocol we can monitor who is coming into our school at all times. Also, please do not remove these signs from the doors.
VAPES ARE ILLEGAL regardless of what is in them. Getting caught in possession with one is a violation of the student code and will result in school consequences, an athletic code violation (making you ineligible for athletics and activities), and a $50 ticket plus a mandatory court appearance from the police. YOUR AGE DOES NOT MATTER, it is a violation for all students. SOCIAL MEDIA PICTURES OF YOU VAPING CAN LEAD TO THESE SAME CONSEQUENCES.
This includes “Juuling”, Juul pods are not permitted on school grounds and the consequences are the same as any other tobacco products.
MINOR SCHOOL PERMIT: Students and Parents of students who are driving on a minor school permit should read over the school driving permit rules attachment. A quick few bullet points are:
- Students must take the most direct route from their home to their school and vice versa.
- Students can only travel to and from their school between the hours of 5:00 AM and 10:00 PM; this rule supersedes the curfew law.
- Students can ONLY travel to an activity they are involved in as long as the school is a bordering school to the Sioux City Community School District and not more than 25 miles away.
- Students cannot drive to an activity they are not participating in even if it is at their school of enrollment.
- Once the student’s activity is over, the student must go home (for example, a JV player cannot stay to attend a Varsity game).
- Students can have one minor household member in their vehicle at a time as long as they are traveling to the same school.
- Students can stop for fuel at the closest station to their route home or to school
If you have any questions about these rules, please call the Iowa DOT at (515) 244-8725.

SILVER CORD OPPORTUNITIES:
There is a terrific resource for students who are working on earning their Silver Cord or meeting community service requirements. This is an online volunteer center for Siouxland, there are now more than 100 nonprofit organizations on VolunteerSiouxland.org, with more than 50 active needs for volunteers on any given day. It is absolutely the EASIEST way for students to find and sign up for volunteer opportunities. It’s also the easiest way to track their volunteer hours – confirmed by the organization. We’ve even added a field to volunteer profiles so they can identify which school they attend, allowing us to provide reports to the schools. And, it’s completely free for the organizations and the volunteers! Finding volunteer opportunities has NEVER been easier!*
Please see Ms. Benson in the Main Office for Silver Cord (http://www.siouxcityschools.org/east-high-school/general-academic-information-2/) opportunities.
