From Mr. Clemente

Dear Winter Park Band families,

What a banner week for the Winter Park Band! I'm so proud of our students for their musicality, their effort, and their dedication to and interactions with each other as we get back to Band this school year.

Congratulations to all of our students who got the opportunity to perform again this week in multiple different venues and share their music and creativity in many different ways. Wednesday evening's Fall Concert was a wonderful evening full of jazz and concert music where all 6 of our instrumental ensembles performed their first "regular" home concert in the Ann Derflinger Auditorium since the Winter Concert of 2019(!). Friday evening, the SOTW performed the first and second movements of their Les Miserables show at the away football game at Hagerty HS. Also Friday evening, the Color Guard debuted their new uniforms and were so excited to perform in them for the first time! Finally, the SOTW had an extremely productive rehearsal day at Fall Mini Camp Saturday. We are excited to say that we have finished learning all of the drill for our show and that this Thursday, 10/7 will be our first performance of the full show. It is exciting that we have everything on the field so early in the semester, and even more so that the full show will be on the field for our rescheduled Middle School Night.

A quick thank you to Dana Adkinson and Michael & Natalie Storch for their incredible photography work at our Band events. You can see a small sampling of their work below in this newsletter, and we will be posting more and more photo albums online on the Band social media throughout the school year.

This week, we have a four day week of school with Friday's teacher work day. The Pit Orchestra resumes rehearsals in preparation for the performances of this years musical "Damn Yankees." Also this week, Jazz Ensemble I will perform at this weekend's Winter Park Autumn Art Festival at 10 AM on Saturday, 10/9.

Lastly, this week the Jazz Fair Share and Semester 1 School Instrument Maintenance charges come due Wednesday, 10/6. These charges only apply to students in the jazz ensembles and if they are using a school-owned instrument in the Band, and families will receive an email Monday, 10/4 if you are responsible for these payments.

Let's make it a great, and short, week!

Mr. Clemente

Week of October 3, 2021

Hello everyone. Thank you, awesome volunteers for a fun game this week! Next week will be middle school night (make up from rain evening), so it’s a great opportunity if you are chaperoning to connect with some middle school families, answer questions about the band program, etc. The game this week is on Thursday (Friday the students are off school), so if you can volunteer, we welcome all help!

Please look at the calendar for spots for the remaining games. We don’t have many games left, and there are some spots left. It is so fun and great to get to know the students!

Senior night is October 22, and I sent an email to the senior parents-if you did not receive something from me, please email me at njstorch@yahoo.com, and I’ll send you more information.

If there is any band parent out there with a sewing machine and sewing experience who can help hem the beautiful new color guard uniforms, please email our wonderful uniform guru Amanda Schaefer at schaefer.momma@gmail.com.

October 26 (Tuesday), we will have Trunk-R-Treat, where parents can decorate vehicles/bring candy for the students to trunk or treat in D Lot after marching band rehearsal that day—probably around 4:30 or 5 but stay tuned for details on that (Thursday is a game that week, so we’ll need to do it on Tuesday). Past years have been very creative and fun!!

Thank you everyone. Have a wonderful (short) week!

Big picture

Pride of the Wildcats - Winter Park Band Fleet Vehicle Support and improvement

We are very proud of our Operations side of the Winter Park Band. We have a dedicated group of parents that take the Winter Park Band & Color Guard to all their events. However, without the use of the large tractor trailer that transports our equipment to and from each marching band event and the small trailer for color guard the task would be next to impossible.

Through the years, the operations group has made many changes to the trailers to improve the functionality for the Winter Park Band. Historically, all of the monies have been raised through private contributions of a select groups of parents and through the Alumni Foundation. Because of this the need of a full fundraiser event to deflect the cost of the band operations was never really until now.

In effort to maintain our large trailer’s top-notch condition, we are planning to do some MAJOR repairs and improvements to the trailer that is now in its 15th year of service for WPHS band. Additionally, we need to either replace (preferable) the small trailer or make it road worthy again.

Some of the items on our list of improvements are costly, including:

  • Repairing some minor damage to larger trailer
  • Repainting the lower section of the large trailer
  • Rewrapping the upper section of the large trailer
  • Replace wheel bearings on front axle
  • Moving the back stairway to the back of the trailer
  • Replacing or repairing the small trailer
  • And other improvements to keep our kids and volunteers safe.

Since we are re-wrapping the large trailer, we will be selling sponsor spots on the larger trailer to defray the cost. There are 10 spots that are available for $1,000 each and the entire front of the trailer for $5,000. These opportunities are a great way to support the Winter Park Band and they are also tax deductible.

Please contact Keith Gavin at kgavin@sscands.com for further information on donations or to provide the goods or services to the improvements that are so desperately needed.

We will be also seeking volunteers to help at a Trailer Work- Days throughout the month of January. We will be repairing minor body damage, painting the trailer and removing the old logos. Please contact Keith Gavin @ kgavin@sscands.com if you can assist.

    PRIVATE LESSONS

Whether a student is learning a musical instrument to pursue a career in music, or simply for personal musical fulfillment and recreation, private lessons are one of the best investments that a parent can provide for their musical child. When working with a private teacher, students receive one-on-one instruction from a professional musician who specializes on that instrument.

Unlike a full band rehearsal experience, studying with a private teacher focuses in on the student’s individual needs. Students who study privately once a week from a professional musician are usually those who excel and find Band more enjoyable. These students frequently earn positions in honor groups like All-State and All-County, and make entry into our more advanced bands like Wind Symphony and Jazz Ensemble I. Some even go on to earn college scholarships, even if they are not majoring in music!

By following the link below, you will find a list of local private teachers. This list is not exhaustive, and there may be other individuals who are not on the list. If you know a private teacher who should be added (or would like to be deleted), please contact Mr. Clemente at michael.clemente@ocps.net.
