Our 5th grade will be presenting their Wax Museum, PTA's K-2 PJ/Game Night is Friday night and during the school day, we will be celebrating our first annual Longfellow Read, Lead, Succeed Day to support Read Across America Week. We will have fun events to celebrate reading all day and the theme of our day is Celebrating a Nation of Diverse Readers!

ELP Nominations
The yearly screening of students for participation in the Extended Learning Program (ELP), the elementary program for gifted and very high ability students, is underway for the 2020-2021 school year. This program is appropriate for students who are at the highest academic levels in their grade. Students can enter this screening pool by Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress (ISASP) scores, teacher nomination or parent nomination. More information is available on the district website www.iowacityschools.org: Departments: Curriculum: Curriculum Areas: Extended Learning Program (ELP): Elementary Services. Only grades three through five are included in this screening process. Kindergarten and first grade students are being screened for ELP services through in-class lessons and collaboration with the classroom teacher throughout the school year. All second graders will be screened in the Spring. Parents will receive notification about second grade screening when it is scheduled at their child’s school. No parent or teacher nominations are necessary for grades K-2. If you would like to nominate your third, fourth or fifth grade child to be tested for ELP services, please complete a parent information form. Forms will be available online between February 21 and March 27, 2020 at https://forms.gle/AYjHSh61bErcyRWi8. Paper forms will be available in the school office during the same time. No forms will be accepted after March 27, 2020 at 4:00 PM.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS
Anyone can join the PTA! We ask for a $10 “goodwill” donation when you join, but this fee is
totally optional. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, March 3, 2020, as an executive board meeting. We will meet at 6:30 p.m. in the Longfellow library. All are welcome, and we hope to see you there! On Friday, March 13th we will have a few school board members here to visit and answer questions. More information to come soon!
CARNIVAL TIME
Every year, Longfellow holds a schoolwide carnival that also is our biggest fundraiser. This
year’s carnival will be on Saturday, April 18, 2020, so please save the date! The event will
include games, a cakewalk, raffles, and a silent auction, as well as food for sale. We will have
more details in the weeks to come, but we hope your whole family can attend. The carnival is a fantastic event, and the money it raises helps us provide field trips, classroom and media support,
special school experiences, and more!

District message on COVID-19
Dear Families,
We understand that there is a great deal of talk and concern about Coronavirus (also known as COVID-19). We want to assure you that we have been and will continue to be working closely with Johnson County Public Health (JCPH) regarding the potential for this virus in our area. JCPH receives its information directly from the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). As of February 27, 2020, IDPH has stated that there are currently no cases of COVID-19 in Iowa and the immediate health risk from COVID-19 is low.
Our priority is to keep students and staff safe while at school. Should COVID-19 become present in our community, we will follow the guidance from JCPH Disease Prevention Specialists regarding necessary protection and prevention measures for students and staff. The District has an infectious disease response plan in place should the need rise to this level.
We want to assure families and staff that we are following the situation closely and will continue to provide updates if and when new information becomes available from JCPH, IDPH, or the CDC. If you have questions regarding COVID-19, please contact JCPH at (319) 356-6040.
Sincerely,
Kristin Pedersen
