ORCHARD DRIVE ELEMENTARY
WE TAKE PRIDE IN OUR TRIBE
AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2018
WILSON'S WORDS
Greetings Orchard Families!
I hope your child has enjoyed the first days of school here at Orchard Drive Elementary! I have been in the classrooms quite a bit and have learned so much about the children! It is very exciting to see their growth from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.
If your child is a parent pickup, I hope you have found out how safe and efficient our new KIDaccount system is. Just a couple of reminders: if you need extra cards, just pop on in the office and they are $2 each; please make sure to have your KIDaccount scan card and ID ready when it is time for pickup; staying in your car will get your card scanned first rather than waiting on the sidewalk; and finally, all transportation changes take place in the office and need to occur before 2:00PM.
We have 2 wooden boxes on poles in the front of the building...1 red one and 1 blue one. The blue box is a Lending Library...this is a place for you to take a book for your child and then to replace it with one that you are done with - there is no cost. The red one is our Kindness Pantry where we allow anyone to take food or other items that are needed - again this is no cost and runs on donations. We always accept donations to both. Our Kindness Pantry is very helpful for people who need a helping hand every now and then.
During AM dropoff, I just would like to remind you that we only run 1 car line of traffic...this is for student and adult safety. Please do not drop your child off in the 2nd lane.
Finally, a friendly reminder that the bell rings at 7:50AM and a child is considered tardy after 8:00AM. If you are dropping your child off after 8:00AM, you will need to park and come inside the building to sign them in.

Ready to Read
Here are a few useful tips for you to encourage your child to read.
- Try not to pressure your child into reading if they have no interest. Instead share the reading, read a page or sentence each.
- Find out what interests your child and aim to find reading material that will "hook" him or her.
- Create a space for reading, somewhere comfortable and with minimal distractions.
- Be patient! No one learns to read overnight and for some it takes a little longer than others.
Nurse Notes
Friendly reminder on the District's sick policy. Please do not send your child until they are 24 hours free of fever (without the use of Tylenol/Motrin), vomiting and diarrhea…Any child who comes back before the 24 hour period will be sent home.
Remind your child to wash their hands, cough into their elbow, drink lots of water and get plenty of sleep. Don’t forget to eat your fruits and vegetables. (Remember to wash those water bottles daily with soap and water or use a fresh clean water bottle!)

Welcome back to school! Students have been excited to check out new library books. Please remember to keep books in a safe place when they come home (backpack is best) and always return them on library day. I'm looking forward to all the stories we'll get to share this year!

Counselor's Corner
Welcome Back! My name is Jill Hadler and I am the School Counselor at Orchard Drive Elementary. I am looking forward to working with you and your child(ren) this year! This is my twenty fourth year in education and my seventeenth year as a School Counselor. I have worked at Orchard Drive Elementary for ten years!
The primary goal of the school counseling program is to assist in the promotion of student success through academic, personal/social, and career development. In order to achieve this goal, I will be working with each class on a weekly (kindergarten & first grade) or bi-weekly basis (second, third, and fourth grades). During the month of September, the focus of the classroom lessons is on the following character trait: Responsibility. Lesson topics will include activities in academic organization, transitions from the prior grade, and classroom rules/safety.
JUNIOR AMBASSADOR PROGRAM
We have some excited new leaders in our building! We have a group of 3rd AND 4th grade students who have volunteered to be our Orchard Junior Ambassadors. They will greet students each morning in the lobby and hallways, and much, much more! This year, we have added some new components to our morning announcements and will also have a 4th grade morning announcement team!
VOLUNTEERS
Thank you to all of those who signed up to volunteer in our building! Please remember to sign-in and sign-out before and after each volunteer experience. If you volunteer at home, you can always log your hours whenever you are here!
We LOVE our Volunteers!
