WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE LAB MEETS THE LIBRARY?
Sarah Latimer- HS Science Teacher
In response to upcoming science standards with more emphasis on the process of science, this year Greg Chmura and I added to his BioScience Fair project; freshmen students will be researching, designing, and conducting their own experiments. This makes even more critical students' need to learn research and database skills. We were thrilled, therefore, to have our own Alison Connelly willing and able to take our classes in the library for a period in which she first taught them what databases are and why one would use them over a Google search, how to conduct good searches (you'd be surprised at how many students don't have this skill) She then assisted us in running our students through their paces in their first database research. Our students learned what academic journals are, how to correctly cite sources, how to locate accurate information on the web, and what constitutes plagiarism. Not only does this enable them to conduct research on topics as diverse as bacterial transfer to dropped food and memory differences between the sexes, but it also prepares our freshmen for high school and college research in any field. Alison is always available when students (and I) get stuck in our research, and will even (with advance warning) put together a reference list on any given topic. I have taken precious time away from my content-heavy course for this every year, and not regretted a minute of it.
