Principal Update - Mr. Spitzley
Doherty Families,
First and foremost, I want to give a huge thank you to our Doherty students, staff, and families. We appreciate your patience, cooperation, and understanding as we worked this morning to get all students home safely.
Please see the message below that was shared this afternoon regarding today's events. Below the communication, you will find a link to a Google Document that contains all of the Zooms links you will need for the week including specials teacher and ancillary staff
WBSD Families,
We would like to provide you with some follow-up information about the events that transpired today. This morning we received a tip that someone made a direct threat on social media, referencing West Bloomfield. We immediately contacted the WBPD to assist us with an investigation to determine if the threat was credible. Our students were already in school and some students were on their way to school. WBSD and WBPD determined that it would be best to cancel school for the day. The Oakland County Sheriff's Department in conjunction with the WBPD located the threat and apprehended the suspect.
Due to potential ongoing threats and heightened stress levels, we have made the decision to move our students to virtual learning for all schools and programs for the remainder of the week, Tuesday, December 14 through Friday, December 17. Our regular schedule will resume on January 3, 2022.
Please be on the lookout for an additional email from your child’s teacher with further directions. Preschool teachers will follow up with families regarding virtual activities. For students with IEP’s please contact your child’s teacher for further direction. Our students will engage in synchronous learning for the remainder of the week. This means that students will be online, learning with their teachers all day, every day. Students will follow their normal school day, zooming into each of their classes.
If your child does not have a computer at home, you need to come to ACS and pick up a device. Oakland Schools will be distributing devices Tuesday - Friday from 7 a.m. - 3 p.m. ACS is located at 5810 Commerce Rd. West Bloomfield. Please pull up to door #2. Upon arrival, please call (248) 865-6489 and someone will assist you.
Athletics and extracurricular activities are canceled for Monday, December 13. Extracurricular activities and after-school activities will still take place for the remainder of the week. Please double-check this with your coach or activity leader. Kids Klub is canceled for the remainder of the week.
WBSD is grateful for our local and county law enforcement both on-site and behind the scenes, to ensure the safety of our students and staff at all times. Their quick response, preparedness, and professionalism led the way for us to maintain composure and control of our environment throughout this unfortunate event.
We are also extremely grateful to our teachers, staff, and WBPD, for their professionalism in maintaining a sense of stability and calm throughout the morning. The supportive environment created by our staff allowed our students to feel safe and calm. We are proud of how our students showed respect and demonstrated cooperation today.
