MARCH BEGINS WITH THE SPRING MUSICAL

Dear Tohickon Families,

Spring is around the corner as we are quickly moving through marking period 3. The month of March is a big planning month as we begin to look forward to the 2020-2021 School Year. The highlight of the month is our Spring Musical. This year the featured production is “Beauty and The Beast Jr.” The performances will take place on March 5, 6, 7 beginning at 7:00 PM in the Tohickon Auditorium. There will also be a matinee presentation on Saturday, March 7, beginning at 2:30 PM. Tickets are available at the door 30 minutes prior to each performance or online at brownpapertickets.org (search Tohickon).

The planning process for the musical begins a year in advance, when the performance is chosen. During the month of November, rehearsals take place and the cast is selected. Once that occurs, there is a rigorous practice schedule every day after school. As the musical approaches, there are some practices held on Saturdays. The students and staff involved in this process are extremely devoted to putting together the best performance possible. Additionally, it is a great experience for our students as they work together and learn the importance of teamwork. We are very thankful for the efforts that all parties put into this process, especially Mr. Dengler (Director), Ms. Robyn Watson (Asst. Director), Mrs. Welch (Production Manager), Mr. Good (Set Construction) and our parent volunteers. Good luck to all!

The remaining weeks of March will involve final preparations for the Ninth Grade Washington, DC Trip in April. We will also be making initial preparations for the PSSA Testing period which is scheduled for 7th and 8th grade students on April 21, 22, 23, 28 and 30. If you have any questions, please contact the main office at (267)893-3300. If you are interested in seeing a great performance, please come out to see our musical later this week. I hope all of our families have a wonderful month!!!

Sincerely,

Kevin Marton

Tohickon Principal

TOHICKON CONTINUES TO BUILD ITS PARTNERSHIP WITH PENN ENGINEERING

Tohickon Middle School has continued to strengthen its partnership with Penn Engineering. The partnership consists of two parts, an engineering (technology education) component and a career development piece.

Mr. Bruce Good, our Technology Education Teacher, has continued to foster the developing relationship with the company. Most recently, several 9th Grade Technology Education students visited the Penn Engineering facility. A former Tohickon student, who is now an engineer at the facility, led the tour for our students. It was amazing to see how things can come full circle.

Mr. Scott Felton and Mrs. Susan Fugate met with Penn's executives at the end of February to plan a career awareness experience for the entire 9th Grade. The purpose of this experience is to orientate students to what a company is and how its different departments play an important role. We will be planning a field trip for all ninth grade students during the month of April.

We are very excited about this partnership! We feel it can provide our students a realistic, applicable experience, that may help some with career decisions moving forward.

TOHICKON STUDENTS SHINE AT MATH COUNTS COMPETITION

On Saturday, February 8th a team of Tohickon students competed at the Bucks County Chapter Mathcouts competition at Christopher Dock Mennonite High School. Mathcounts is a national middle school competition program that promotes mathematics achievement through a series of fun and engaging “bee” style contests. Students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades are eligible to participate in the competition. Our team worked very hard over the past five months preparing for the competition by successfully solving challenging and rigorous math problems under the guidance of their coach, Mrs. Bellavance. Tohickon’s team finished in fourth place out of twelve teams in Bucks County, which is their highest placement in the past seven years! We also had one student finish in the top 10 of individual scorers and compete in the Countdown Round, and another student finish in the top 20 of individual scorers. Congratulations to Susanna D., James W., Prithvi K., Quinn B. and Zachary P. for a job well done representing Tohickon Middle School.

For more information about the Mathcounts competition series visit www.mathcounts.org.

TEAM ODYSSEY BAKE SALE

Team Odyssey will be doing a bake sale to support the ASPCA on Thursday, March 5th immediately after school by the bus doors. All baked goods will be $1. The sale will then continue at the 8th grade boys basketball game in gym until 4:00 PM. Volunteers are needed to bake items for the sale and work the sale. All baked donations need to be individually wrapped for sale. Please email Mrs. Bellavance at abellavance@cbsd.org with any questions. Please consider supporting our team fundraiser by sending in money for your son or daughter to purchase baked goods at dismissal on Thursday, March 5th. Thank you for your support!

LIBRARY LUNCH AND LEARN

Mrs. Fox has created a program called Library Lunch and Learn. Several times per year, during the lunch periods, students are given an option (first come, first serve) to spend their lunch in the library listening to a professional from our community share what they do. During the month of March, we are very fortunate to have William Daly (Horsham Police Chief), Officer Kevin Pope (former SWAT Team and Tohickon Student) and Kate Ryan (K9 Officer) and her dog Gallant. This will take place on Wednesday, March 11.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE HEALTH OFFICE

The health office has recently seen an increase of cold-related symptoms, and this is not uncommon with the warm winter season. With the recent concern of the Coronavirus, remind your children that the best way to avoid germs is to wash their hands often with soap and water. Please give medication at home, before school, as the nurse’s office does not have cold medication to administer to students. Children who have a fever above 100.3 degrees should remain home until fever free without medication. Also, we encourage students to carry water bottles to remain hydrated throughout the school day.

Important Information for Incoming 7th Graders

All incoming 7th grade students are required to have a Pennsylvania State Mandated dental exam. Dental exams are acceptable with any date after 9/1/2019. Please complete and return the dental exam form prior to the start of the new school year. Also, 7th grade students need to have the Tdap and Meningitis vaccinations prior to the start of the new school year. Please keep this in mind as your child has their yearly physical completed. Feel free to contact the health office at 267-893-3315 with any questions or health concerns you have for your child. Here’s to a calm end to winter!
