Girls Who Code
Aldine Edition: October 2019
Thank you for Supporting Girls in Computer Science!
We are partnering with Girls Who Code to bring free computer science opportunities to girls across our community and are thankful that you have agreed to bring this opportunity to girls at your school!
What is Girls Who Code?
Girls Who Code Clubs are FREE programs for 3rd-5th or 6th-12th grade girls to join a sisterhood of supportive peers and role models and use computer science to change the world. When you start a Club, Girls Who Code provides free and flexible curriculum, resources, and a mini-grant of $300 if you have 3+ students enrolled in your Club.
All you need is space to host the Club, computers and internet, and an adult who is 18+ to help facilitate the Club. Clubs are led by Facilitators, who can be teachers, computer scientists, librarians, parents, or volunteers from any background or field. Many Facilitators have NO technical experience and learn to code alongside their Club members.
How do you sign up?
Step 1: Create your GWC Account!
Create an account on Girls Who Code HQ
To start a new Girls Who Code Club, select “I want to start a club”. If you have been invited to join an existing Club to serve as a facilitator, please click here for more information.
Step 2: Submit a 2019-20 Clubs application!
Step 3: Look for your Club confirmation email...
Girls Who Code reviews completed Clubs Applications on a rolling basis. Once your Club is approved, you’ll receive an email with your Club Code and additional information for next steps. Please make sure to add clubs@girlswhocode.com to your contacts list so our emails don’t end up in spam!
Step 4: Review the resources!
Special Steps for our 3-5th grade Clubs:
For the 2019-20 school year, Girls Who Code recommends all Clubs begin their year with the curriculum that accompanies our non-fiction book, Learn to Code and Change the World. The meeting guides utilize excerpts from the book that are available to all Facilitators and Club members on HQ, so Clubs can get started with no delay! For more information, check out our FAQs.
Beginning later this fall, a set of meeting guides anchored in our first fiction book, The Friendship Code, will be made available. At that time, all approved 3-5th grade Clubs will have the opportunity to order a Resource Kit containing 5 FREE copies of The Friendship Code for their Club to use. Facilitators are responsible for ordering this kit when it becomes available mid-fall. For more information, check out our FAQs.
Launch your Club!
