Welcome back! And welcome, Class of 2025!
Dear Nazareth College Hillel Community,
I'm so excited to start this year of learning and growth together. I look forward to meeting everyone, and programming exciting *new* opportunities to explore our Jewish identities!
Please see below for everything we've planned so far. I'm especially excited that for the first time Nazareth College Hillel will be holding Shabbat EVERY Friday(!!!) at 6pm in the Sulam Center.
But...growth requires help! We're ISO a new Outreach Intern (info below).
And, last but certainly not least — the High Holidays are fast approaching! Rosh Hashanah begins the evening of September 6th. We have options for in-person and for virtual observances. Scroll to the end of this email for all the info, or visit this doc. Any student who requires assistance navigating communications with faculty/staff regarding absence due to religious observance, please contact me. I'm more than happy to help draft an email, rehearse a conversation, or reach out to faculty directly on your behalf.
Wishing everyone a semester filled with new learning, friendships, and peace,
Laura Matthews (she/her/hers), Hillel Advisor in Center for Spirituality
Shabbat
We'll have candles, grape juice, challah, and vegetarian dinner. We'll talk about the good and bad of our past week, and what we're looking forward to or dreading in the upcoming one.
Mostly, we'll create a space to just — *be* — and be together <3
Fridays @ 6pm
Sulam Center (George Hall, across from Colies)
ISO
If you're a people-person and a self-starter, this is the perfect role for you!
PS - if you're *neither* of those things, but are looking for some experience and are willing to learn, this is the perfect role for you, too!
Get in touch to chat about it: lmatthe41@naz.edu

The Jewish Learning Fellowship (JLF) is a 10-week experiential, conversational seminar for students looking to deepen their understanding of Judaism on their own terms. We’re interested in asking big questions. You know, the big stuff — like Who am I? What communities am I a part of? What is worth committing myself to, and why? And we don’t purport to have any of the big answers. We make no claims about the “right” way to practice or not to practice Judaism. Our job is to help you explore the tradition in a safe space and find your own place, on your terms, in Judaism’s Great Conversation.
Nazareth students will join (virtually) with students from Rochester area colleges for a cohort led by a rabbinical student from the Jewish Theological Seminary.
Upon completion of the Fellowship, students will receive a $180 stipend. Stay tuned for more info.
