The TIGER Times
Together We Will Learn, Excel, and Succeed
A Message from Mrs. Fockler, Principal
August 7th Edition
As we plan for a beginning like no other we have seen in the past, our focus will still be to ensure that:
- every child, every day is finding a way to feel connected
- every child, every day is being challenged by new learnings and experiences
- every child, every day knows they have a champion they can turn to
Spring of 2020 has challenged staff and students to find a new normal for learning, connected us in new ways and required our champions to champion from afar. Our fall may not be “normal,” but our learning will not only continue, it will thrive!! We can’t wait to move on to the next phase of learning under Covid-19 and we know all returning and new students to LES will be welcomed with open arms (virtually) to our community - we will continue to grow!
The school year is quickly approaching, and we are diligently planning and preparing for Monday, August 31st. I will be sending important information over the next few weeks as we prepare. Please remember that there are lots of moving parts to opening the school year virtually and some items are subject to change. We are all working hard to transition to a positive virtual environment.
We are committed to maintaining the highest standards so that there will be no shortage of opportunities for your student to feel challenged on a daily basis with high quality instruction and have a wide variety of options to get connected to their school and fellow students. There are many ways to stay connected- FOF, TIGER Times, LES Website and Twitter @FCPSBFockler and @LESFCPS. Updates will be sent out periodically throughout the next week via FOF- stay tuned!
Our teachers are very excited to meet their new LES Tigers! Schedules are being developed to include a two week phased in approach to full virtual instruction. Classroom teachers will be sharing specific schedules closer to the beginning of school. Virtual school hours will model the "traditional school day" at Lewistown. You can expect synchronous (live face to face) instruction in math, ELA, SS/Science (3 days a week), PATHS (social emotional learning- 2 days a week) and specials.
Please join me for a social distanced Principal Meet and Greet Drive Thru next week! Wednesday, Aug. 12th 8:30 - 10:00am or 3:00 - 5:00pm I will be outside excited to meet our young Lewistown Tigers! I would love to meet every tiger before school starts!
There are many updates that are being shared this week in our Principal Message including devices, scheduling, virtual orientations, shout out student celebrations and more! Please reach out if you have any questions!
Coming soon:
- Classroom assignments
- Classroom schedules

A Message from Ms. MacKay, LES Coordinator of Specialized Programs
You Need to ‘Name It to Tame It’ as We Adjust through Changing Times
What amazes me is our children’s ability to adjust to change and do so because we have to. As an educator we are taught the many varied and unusual functions of our nugget- the brain. But what has been most prevalent during these trying times is the flexibility of the brain and how with proper structures in place, we can learn differently. With that being said, there are a handful of administrators in the school system embracing the information in Beyond Behaviors. This book emphasizes the use of brain research and compassion to understand behavioral challenges. It speaks to CO-regulation before self-regulation. The power of relationships! Even my own children have struggled with not having daily interactions with peers and consistent adults like teachers. The text emphasizes the need for trusted adults that can assist a child to recognize their bodies reactions to stresses and external stimuli. Once an individual can recognize their bodies reaction they can name it and begin to use their brain to tame it. You need to name it to tame it!
We are all adjusting, growing, learning and leading through this temporary moment in time. If I can be of support to you or your child I am happy to help. I am at Lewistown during the summer months on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please feel free to email or call so I can connect you to any and all necessary resources.
Wishing Your Family Healthy Minds and Bodies!
