Tuesday – 9th & 10th Grades in the Media Center
Wednesday - Kindergarten through 4th Grade in the Cafeteria

If you have not yet completed the questionnaire, please do so at your earliest convenience. Details follow:

Thank you for your cooperation. Please let me know if you have any questions by emailing ksener@fultonscienceacademy.org
HOMEWORK & STUDY HALL
In response to questions posed about homework, I'd like to inform you that students are able to join regularly-scheduled tutoring sessions, or attend study hall during regular club time. Some students may prefer to attend study hall instead of a club. There is no charge for either tutoring sessions or study hall.
To review tutoring sessions, please click here:
http://fultonscienceacademy.org/tutoring-days/
Tutoring sessions are designed for students who are feeling especially challenged in their classes. Therefore, please always check with your teacher ahead of time before attending a tutoring session so teachers can plan accordingly.
FSAPS study hall is open to any student who wants to study and work on homework instead of joining a club(s). For study hall, students should simply go to the cafeteria during regular club time. Adults will be present to monitor students' work and help ensure a quiet environment that is conducive to studying and homework completion.
If your child opts for study hall, he/she should be picked up at the 4:20 carpool pickup period.
Again, on behalf of all of the faculty and administrators here at Fulton Science Academy, thank you for all you do. We appreciate you greatly and feel so honored to have a chance to teach your beautiful children.
Gratefully,
Kenan Sener

New State-of-the-Art Lab Equipment Coming to FSA
Labs will be furnished with college-level basics like heated stir plates, scientific scales, refrigerated storage, and biohazard safety equipment. The upper level high school courses will also be working with advanced equipment such as DNA gel electrophoresis apparatus', carbon dioxide gas probes, and laboratory grade glassware.
"The opportunities that equipment like this provide are something most students typically don't experience until college," said AP Bio Professor Blake Shealy. "I am so happy that FSA supports our desire as teachers to engage our students in a way that is unlike anywhere else!"
Equipment is expected to arrive within the next week or so.

FSA Announces New School-wide Hashtag
For quite some time, we have discussed a desire to create a school-wide hashtag that reflects our school and our core values.
We are happy to announce our new hashtag today.
At FSA, we believe that everything begins with tenets of caring, kindness and compassion. From that foundation, other virtues such as hard work, professionalism, perseverance, altruism, etc., can be built.
It is for this reason that we have chosen the following hashtag for the 2016-2017 school year:
#fsacares
Caring is a broad word that applies to many different environments, including academics.
At Fulton Science Academy...
We care about our students and faculty…
We care about academics…
We care about the well-being of everyone here…
We care about the community outside of our school walls...
We care about anyone, at any time, who needs a helping hand…
At FSA, we care about everyone, everyday….
We care, therefore we are successful…
Corporate Sponsors Needed
As such, we ask our FSA family to please consider whether your business or company would like to become a business partner with our school. We have a number of wonderful sponsorship opportunities available that will help our children greatly.
To learn more, please email mbowman@fultonscienceacademy.org. Thank you!
Feedback Requested for First-Ever FSA Song
Dear FSA Students, Parents, and Faculty:
It has come to my attention that our school would benefit from an official school-wide "saying/school song” – an Alma Mater!
I would love to write a musical piece that corresponds with a meaningful message that the FSA family will appreciate. We also want to create a song that students will be able to recall for many years to come!
I seek the creativity of the entire FSA community in this endeavor, please. Whether you’re a talented songwriter, a poet, a creative writer, or a simple doodler, I would love to see your work and encourage you to please share your thoughts and feedback with me.
Moving forward, we are looking for your thoughts and experiences about our school, ideally written in a poetic form. For example, what does FSA stand for? Why are we proud to be here? Why do we do what we do at FSA? What are our goals? Where do we see our future?
Togetherness, hard work, perseverance…Can you sing STEAM? These are a few starting points to get you thinking.
As an example, I’ve attached an mp3 and a pdf file below with a few words I came up with to get you warmed up for the challenge. Please feel free to sing along!
Please send all words of art to: ehawk@fultoncienceacademy.org and we’ll go from there. A collaboration between artists is really fun and reaps great personal reward.
Additionally, the author of the selected submission(s) will be awarded with a $250 cash prize.
Your contributions are paving the way for a brighter musical future here at FSA. Thank you for your ongoing support of our school. We appreciate you greatly!

FSA Announces Spring Break Trip to "The Capitals of Scandinavia"
Fulton Science Academy Private School is pleased to announce an international travel opportunity to “The Capitals of Scandinavia." This trip, which applies to students in grades 6-10, will take place in the Spring of 2017.
As our world becomes increasingly more interconnected, it is critical for our students to become more culturally aware, explore new ideas, and experience, first-hand, life in other countries. We believe that when students are given an opportunity to see educational lessons at work outside of the traditional classroom, they develop a new and valuable perspective about the world around them.
An informational meeting about the trip to Scandinavia will be held on Tuesday, September 20th, at 4:20 p.m. in the FSA media center. The purpose of this meeting is to provide additional details, a proposed itinerary, etc. An EF Tour representative will also attend this meeting and will be happy to answer your questions. SPACE FOR THIS TRIP IS LIMITED. Reservations for this trip will begin to be accepted after this meeting, and spaces will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
If you plan to attend this meeting, please email nturan@fultonscienceacademy.org no later than Monday, September 19. We ask for an RSVP so that we can plan space accordingly. Thank you. We hope to see you there!
2016-2017 Student Council Update
It's time to determine the FSAPS Student Council for the 2016-17 school year! Through this process, each homeroom class in grades 4-10 will elect Student Council representatives.
There will potentially be two winners per homeroom. The student with the most votes will most likely (after administrative approval) be the child who will attend the meetings and will relay information to the class. The runner up will assist and potentially replace the other student if necessary.
The one primary representative from each homeroom will need to attend meetings once a week (the day has yet to be determined) at 7:30 a.m.
2016- 2017 Student Council Election Schedule
September 19 – September 21
- Each candidate should be given time to share their speeches with their homeroom class. Depending on how many candidates are in the homeroom, the speeches can be given through Wednesday during homeroom class time.
- Following the last speech, the students will vote by secret ballot. Ballots will be collected and counted by homeroom teachers. An announcement of all Student Council winners will be made.
Students Enjoy Sunshine and Fresh Air as Part of their Learning Experience
Research proves that keeping kids active at school is a superb way to increase learning, sharpen focus, and even boost test results. Even as adults, as many of us have experienced, if one's mind is feeling cluttered (or you're having a mid-afternoon slump), a brisk walk or a quick burst of fresh air can provide a renewed sense of clarity and focus. This is certainly true for kids, too!
We love seeing our precious children smiling and enjoying the sunshine. The giggles and laughter we hear as they learn and play together is such a wonderful sound. It it truly music to our ears.
Pre-K and Kindergarten Students Plan Trip to the Art Barn
Pre-K and Kindergarten students will be heading to see Farmer Sue and her fabulous Art Barn on Wednesday, September 28th. Children will enjoy a hayride, a fun run to catch and keep a pumpkin, a picnic lunch, and a chance to create a painting in the Art Barn! However, the BEST part about visiting the Art Barn is learning about and interacting with all of the rescued animals on the farm. Cockadoodle doo...we can't wait to see you, Farmer Sue!

Middle School BasketBall
Elementary Theater Club
Theater Club has been a very positive experience for our students in the areas of self-expression and dramatic elements. We have learned elements of drama through the art of theater games. In these games, students have had to step out of their comfort zone by focusing on characterization and timing of movements and gestures. We have enjoyed engaging in the games together, and students have already become more useful of their environments in acting out new roles!
First Graders Work on Measuring
Mrs. Whitlock's math class has loved learning about measuring length. "We have measured with various non-standard units this week and have really enjoyed comparing the use of different units." (eg. paper clips versus popsicle sticks).

Room Parents still Needed!
A Room Parent (Mom or Dad ) is the first parent a teacher will contact with issues about class activities such as field trips, performances, celebrations, items needed, and assisting teachers as required. It is an incredibly rewarding experience and is so important to our children and our hardworking faculty that each teacher have a room parent to assist them as necessary.
In lower grades, this position is typically more hands-on and involved than in higher grades; a teacher/parent liaison of sorts.
The following teachers do not yet have room parents:
Kanov - Pre-K
Whitlock - 1st Grade
Korukmez - 5th Grade
Kurt - 6th & 7th Grade
Shealy - 6th Grade
Will You Please Help? If so, please reach out to Aimee Nobile at abloom3@earthlink.net. Thank you.

PSAT UPDATE - Important Information!
FSA will offer an administration of the PSAT/NMSQT exam at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, October 19th. This test will be eligible for all 8th, 9th, and 10th graders, but PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED!
The PSAT/NMSQT® (or Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) is, as the title suggests, a preliminary version of the SAT. Not only does the PSAT help prepare students to take the SAT or ACT, the great thing about the PSAT/NMSQT is that a high score can also open the door to National Merit Scholarships and other awards. (Please note that only juniors are eligible for the National Merit Scholarship.)
The PSAT/NMSQ is approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes, so students will miss their first few periods of the day. The testing location will be at FSA, in the gym, and will begin promptly at 8 a.m. All students must be in the gym by 8 a.m. Once testing begins, students will not be permitted to enter the testing room late.
ALL students who sign up to take the PSAT/NMSQT will be required to attend a pre-gridding session one week prior to the exam date. This pre-gridding session will occur in the cafeteria at 8 a.m. on October 12 and should take about 30 to 40 minutes.
If you would like for your child to take the PSAT, you must email Ms. Kelly at lkelly@fultonscienceacademy.org and let her know that you want your child to take the PSAT on October 19th.
You can also have your child see Ms. Kelly in the Guidance office in order to sign up in person. The deadline to sign up your child to take the PSAT/NMSQT is September 22nd for test ordering purposes. All exams must be ordered by this date. The PSAT/NMSQT is for 8th, 9th and 10th graders only

If it is listed on the registration form that your child has asthma or allergies that require a medical device, you are required to provide that device to the front office immediately. All medicines and rescue devices (inhalers, epipens, etc.) will be locked in the administrative area. Students who have written medical orders to carry their devices with them at all times are able to do so, but an updated, 2016-2017 medical form must be on file with our front office.
As per the FSA Student Handbook, in an emergency situation, the school will phone 911 in any situation where we feel a child's health is in danger and professional medical intervention is necessary.

Private Music Lessons Available
FSAPS is very happy to offer private music lessons to students, teachers, and members of the administration. Although enrollment can be made throughout the year and fees can be pro-rated, spaces are filled on a first-come, first-served basis and spots are filling quickly. We kindly request that any families who have doctor appointments or other commitments please plan to pick up your child from the front lobby prior to 3:00 p.m.
EARLY MORNING MUSIC AND CODING CLASSES CONTINUE
Early morning classes are offered to students in grades five or higher (on an optional basis) and are held between 7:15 a.m. and 7:55 a.m. Thanks to these early morning classes, students will now have the option to take additional classes in the areas of either band/orchestra and/or coding classes before our regular school day begins. We are proud to offer these optional music and coding classes, as they should give an extra “boost” to our already extensive course curriculum.
Please note that while the music classes are open to any student in 5th grade or higher, the coding classes are only open to students in 6th grade through 8th grade.
Students may choose one day of music and two days of coding classes.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE CLASSES
- Students should be in the classroom no later than 7:15 a.m. Students will not be allowed to enter into classroom after 7:20 a.m. because it would be disruptive to the learning process.
- Please note that the teachers reserve the right to remove any student who misses more than three classes in any semester.
If your child is interested in registering for these optional music and/or coding classes, please CLICK HERE to register.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

APPLY NOW FOR YOUR 2017 TAX CREDIT
Dear FSA Families,
We are pleased to announce details surrounding the GA Tax Credit Scholarship Program. Applications to participate are being accepted now, and we hope you will choose to participate.
This program provides an opportunity for taxpayers to redirect Georgia tax dollars and, in turn, provide financial aid assistance to FSA students. We would greatly appreciate it if you would please apply and choose Fulton Science Academy Private School as your designated school.
Please also inform your friends, co-workers, and relatives who live in Georgia; they can also participate and help support our school.
How can this tax credit benefit both Fulton Science Academy Private School and myself?
Under this law, you can redirect a portion of your Georgia income tax to provide financial aid assistance to FSA students based upon need. You will receive a tax credit on your state income taxes and a charitable deduction on your federal incomes taxes for the amount of your contribution. For married couples filing jointly, the maximum tax credit-eligible contribution is $2,500 ($1,000 as an individual).
How do I participate in the program?
It’s easy. All you have to do is complete our easy paperless process, and Apogee will submit the paperwork on your behalf. Apogee will process your approval notice within 30 days. Once the approval notice is received, please send your payment by check or pay online within 60 days of your approval date.
Is there a limit regarding how much I can give each year?
Yes, the amount you can give is limited by your tax filing status:
- Married Filing Jointly: Maximum of $2,500
- Individual Filer: Maximum of $1,000
- Married Filing Separately: Maximum of $1,250
- Individuals who receive pass-through income can contribute up to $10k
- C-Corporation: Up to 75% of GA tax liability
Can I direct my contribution to help a specific student?
Although we understand why it would be ideal to designate specific recipients, this is not possible. Apogee does not accept donations that are allocated for specific individuals. Donors would lose their ability to receive a charitable contribution, as well as the Georgia tax credit.
Apogee is a 501c3 non-profit organization and, as such, is bound first and foremost by the rules and regulations governing this special status. As a 501c3, Apogee is not permitted to accept any donations directed to a specific individual. To do so would put Apogee’s non-profit status in jeopardy and, in turn, its SSO status in jeopardy.
Who or what is Apogee?
Apogee Scholarship Fund is a state registered SSO (Student Scholarship Organization) as well as a 501c3 non-profit organization whose primary functions are to facilitate the process of distributing tax credits in exchange for donations and to disburse those funds for private school tuition scholarships.
"Apogee" (ap-uh-jee) is defined as the highest point (typically of an arc). To this end, Apogee strives to help children reach their highest educational potential.
How do I know what my GA tax liability is?
Your GA tax liability is typically 6% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI). You can also look at Line 18 of your GA tax return (Form 500) to learn your GA tax liability.
Why should I give now?
The State has placed a yearly cap on the amount of credit available. That amount is $58 million. That means that every school, every taxpayer, and every corporation in GA is drawing from the exact same pool of credits.
Once the funds are distributed, interested agencies must wait until the following year to participate in the program. Once funds are deposited, they are immediately available to assist families who want the best educational choice for their children.
Please note: The yearly cap is generally met on the very first day of January; we expect this trend to continue until the cap is raised beyond the $58 million. For this reason, it is strongly encouraged that you please submit your application as soon as possible to be considered for approval.
Can I reduce my quarterly estimated tax payments by the amount I donate?
This is a great opportunity to write the check to support education instead of paying that portion of estimated taxes. Please ask your accountant to reduce your quarterly estimated tax payment by the amount of your contribution. This will reduce each of your quarterly payments by 25% of the amount you intend to contribute.
What happens if my donation exceeds my tax liability?
The tax credit is a “non-refundable” credit. This means you cannot receive a refund for any more than your GA tax liability. Any excess credit beyond your tax liability can be carried forward for up to five years.
Do I have to include my check with my donation package when mailing to Apogee?
No. Apogee cannot accept payments prior to January 1. Since the vast majority of applications received are early applications, payment should be made after approval has been secured. Payment must be madewithin 60 days of approval.
What is Apogee's Tax ID Number?
FEIN: 26-2693572
Is this donation a charitable deduction on my Federal return in addition to the credit?
Yes. Because of the 501c3 status, you are eligible to receive a Federal Charitable Deduction for the amount of your contribution. The law does require that you increase your State income by the amount of your Charitable Deduction on your Federal return (donation amount).
Can Apogee help me understand how this credit will affect my specific tax situation?
Yes. Apogee is well versed in the specifics of how this credit affects most tax scenarios and is happy to offer guidance regarding how this credit is related to your specific tax situation.
As always, we also suggest that you please consult your personal tax advisor, as they will have the best understanding of your specific tax situation.
