News From Nighthawk Nation
Elevating Excellence in Academics, Character & Community
Edition 3 - Week of 9/16/19
Leadership Corner
Mr. Bishop - Executive Director
Mrs. Baker - K-3 Principal
This was an incredible week of learning! Small group instruction is beginning to take place and we are focusing on meeting the needs of all students. Small groups are fluid and are adjusting on a regular basis to meet individual needs.
On Thursday, we had our first fire drill. Students were spectacular and it was one of the best fire drills I have ever witnessed. We will do ten various drills throughout the school year to address the different types of emergencies that we may encounter. This could include a shelter in place (i.e. tornado), lockdown, lockout, or evacuate the building.
Thank you for the parents that have reached out to celebrate what our incredible staff is doing. I have received numerous emails sharing how our teachers are making a difference. I pass those notes on to them. Please continue to reach out with celebrations.
From all of the staff at NVCS K-3, thank you so much for allowing us the opportunity to teach your children. It is an honor and responsibility that we do not take lightly.
Notes from Driveline
Thank you all for your support in helping to expedite Driveline in a safe and efficient manner. Yesterday, we completed driveline in 20 minutes! Your children's safety is our number one priority. Please help us be great neighbors and avoid parking at the Larimer County building and walking to our campus.
Morning Dropoff
Thank you for staying behind the black fence in the morning. This allows staff to interact with students and keeps everyone safe.
Lunch Update
Please refer to the attached letters in regards to Nutrition Services at NVCS - K-3.
Mrs. Hejl - 4-8 Principal
Hello Nighthawks,
What an exciting week! This week I was able to host multiple rewards lunches with students who earned lunch and crafting with the principal, enjoy our after school theatre program and their fun exercises, hear about the 7th and 8th grade field trip, and plan for Destination Imagination with some amazing educators!
Notes From Driveline:
Larimer County Ticketing:
Parents, please be aware that the Larimer County Building will begin ticketing cars that do not belong to their clientele. We strongly encourage that parents use our driveline system to pick up and drop off students.
Arriving After 7:50 am:
Students arriving after 7:50 am are able to enter through the front doors of the building. Tardy slips will not be assigned until after 8:03 a.m. This will allow students time to get to their classes and lockers without having to run around the building.
4th Grade Healthy Hearts Visit:
Monday, 9/23, Tuesday 9/24, and Wednesday 9/25 The 4th grade class is participating in UC Health’s Healthy Hearts program next week. Healthy Hearts provides free cardiovascular education and cholesterol screenings to students as part of their health and science education. Students will learn about their heart, heart disease, risk factors and they will have the opportunity to participate in a free cholesterol screening during the school day.
Running Club:
Running club is up and running (no pun intended) at the 4-8 campus. Running club is held every Wednesday and Friday from 7:30-7:50 on the turf field. Participation is building as news about this fun club spreads.
Mr. Bissell, AP/AD - Nighthawk Nation Athletic News
Nighthawk Community,
It has been a pleasure walking into classes and seeing all the great learning that is happening. Students are in a safe, caring, challenging learning environment in all their classes. I feel blessed working with great students and a fantastic staff. Mrs. Baker has done an outstanding job establishing a positive culture within our school.
From the world of Athletics; it was a perfect week as our A and B volleyball teams won both their matches this week and our soccer team won its only game. Next week our Volleyball team has a home match on Monday and travels on Wednesday for their match. Soccer travels on Monday and Thursday for their contests. Be of luck to all student/athletes.
Officer Jalali - Nighthawk Safety
Getting to and from school safely
Did you know getting hit by a car is the third leading cause of death for kids ages 5-9? (psychologicalscience.org) But did you also know that sidewalks can reduce pedestrian crashes by up to 90%? (safekids.org) These statistics aren’t meant to scare you! But it’s important to know how we can prevent accidents like this and what you can do to stay safe!
Here are some tips to keep you safe while walking to and from school
Keep your phone down and head up while you walk
Look left and right before crossing. While crossing, continue to look left and right in all directions
It’s always best to walk on the sidewalk. But if there is no sidewalk, walk against traffic and stay as far away from the cars as possible. Walking against traffic allows you to see oncoming cars that may not necessarily see you
Watch out for cars backing up from parking spaces
Stop, look, and wait at each lane of traffic and make eye contact with the drivers if you can before crossing
Don’t cross between parked cars where drivers can’t see you
Wear bright colored clothes
Walk with a friend if possible
Don’t push, shove, or chase other kids while close to the street
Always stay alert- constantly be aware of what the cars around you are doing
Notes from PTO
2019 HAWK WALK Theme: Color Your Character
It’s that exciting time of year again. Time for the super-fun Hawk Walk and Spirit Week celebration. Here are the important details:
Spirit Week will be Sept 30th - Oct 4th
Events include:
Monday, Sept 30th Black & White Day
Tuesday, Oct 1st Sports Day
Wednesday, Oct 2nd New Vision Spirit Day & HAWK WALK
Thursday, Oct 3rd Decade Day
Friday, Oct 4th Wacky Tacky (crazy mismatched everything)
What is HAWK WALK?
Hawk Walk is New Vision’s annual, fun-filled walk-a-thon. This year we are excited to have it at our new soccer field at the 4-8 campus. In addition, something new is being added, buddy-building activities. Team-building, buddy activities are planned to promote important cohesiveness between our two campuses. For example, the kindergarten students will be participating in multiple stations with their “big buddy” in grades 4th and 5th.
How can you help are parent/guardian?
1) Donate. This is PTO’s biggest fundraiser of the year. The money earned will go toward the remaining cost of the playground of the grade 4-8 campus, as well updating the K-3 campus playground. Students will receive a donation sheet and envelope to bring home. Any amount donated is appreciated.
Prizes will be awarded for the following donated amounts: $25, $50, $100, $150 (prizes to be disclosed at a later date)
2) Volunteer. Keep your eye out for a Sign Up Genius for volunteers to help the day of the event.
3) Purchase a Cheer Poster. Show your spirit and CHEER your student on. Cheer posters will be on sale for $5. Once purchased, a poster board will be sent home to be decorated by you and your child. The crazier the better.
Return your finished poster board to NVCS on the Monday of Spirit Week, and PTO will hang it up on the fence (weather permitting), or inside the hallways for students to admire and see your support. Afterwards, the students can take them home.
School Accountability Committee
Technology Use at Home
As a reminder, NVCS student computers and user accounts are monitored by the school for security, safety and behavioural purposes. This is particularly important to keep in mind if your student accesses their NVCS Google G Suite for Education account through the Chrome Web Browser at home. If a student's account is signed into the Chrome Web Browser, any activity on that account is visible and accessible to both the school and the student. Student accounts should only be used for school purposes.
To ensure other family members are not working through an NVCS Google G Suite for Education account in Chrome, please use the following Google article to create separate profiles within Chrome.
