Ram Roundup

Broad Rock Parent and Community Newsletter August 28, 2020

Principal's Message

Greetings Broad Rock Families,

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year! As we plan for a beginning like no other that we have seen in the past, we want to assure you that we remain dedicated to the well-being of your children. Classroom assignments will be mailed on Monday August, 31st. Please expect a call from your child's teacher as teachers have already began to contact families.

With that being said, it is time for us to reopen our schools in a way that we have never imagined here in Richmond, in Virginia, or in the United States for that matter. Yes, we are reopening our schools virtually, with love.

The RPS "Reopen with Love" plan is our guide for working to make sure we are paving the way in ensuring the safety of our most precious commodity...the children. Every decision made from the district, down to those made here at Broad Rock is being made out of love. Our children are going to be the ones that create a new future, that pave the way for new ideas, and develop solutions to problems that don't yet exist.

Virtual Instruction is not new, but it has never been done or attempted at this magnitude. We are going to make mistakes, but as a family/community, we will learn from them. I am asking that you give yourself grace as you figure out how to be the best parent you can be in this current situation. I am asking that you give your child's teacher grace, as they figure out how to be the best teacher they can be in this online platform. I promise you, going virtual does not mean teaching has gotten easier. I am also asking that you give the school as a whole grace, as we work to figure out how to move that feeling of the Broad Rock Ram family to a virtual space. From a school that prides itself on family, love and coming together, we must not lose who we are because the location of our teaching and learning has changed. Remember, we are Rock Solid, and will make this work together!

Once school starts, we will have modified hours on campus, as we are working virtually too. We will be on campus 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday of each week. Additionally, we will be open by appointment only. We will communicate with you virtually through the Ram Roundup (school Newsletter), Parentlink, and Town Hall meetings. I am looking forward to a powerful year filled with unimaginable learning experiences!

Tips for at home learning:

  • Create a space for learning- Clear a quiet space for your child within your home/office/childcare setting and designate a stable place for them to write (and use their chromebook)

  • Help your child establish and stick to a routine for waking up, school work, meals, play time, and bedtime.

Emergency Childcare Survey

To help us get a sense of exactly how many families require this support, we are asking anyone who needs emergency childcare this fall to complete this survey as soon as possible. It will only take a couple of minutes.

Spring Pictures

Strawbridge delivered school pictures. If your child took a spring picture, they are available for pick up from Monday - Friday from 9:30 - 12:30.

All new registration will take place online this year. Registration is now open. If you need to register your preschool or student, please click the link below.

Need a Chromebook?

Big picture

Reading At Home

Your child should either read independently for two 20-minute sessions per day, or listen to an audiobook or be read to. Any reading material is fine, as long as you feel it's appropriate. If your child struggles with five or more words on the page, then the selection is too difficult.
