GCPS Promotion & Retention Update

Gwinnett County Public Schools will use grades to determine promotion and retention for students at the elementary and middle school levels. Students will be offered face to face summer school in grades 6-8 for students who do not meet the 5 out of 6 promotion criteria (passing with 70+%). We will meet as a team to begin identifying students who need summer school intervention this week during planning. See calendar for dates. Student profile sheets with grade reports will be provided. Copies of the form are available on the JMS Training Page.

Academic and Behavioral Expectations

Students are to be engaged in learning for the remaining days of school. When students are actively engaged in structured learning, the behavioral concerns are diminished. Students are finding opportunities

Gradebook and Grading

Please make sure you are updating your grades weekly! This is a critical time for students to know their progress and status toward mastery. Please remember to provide ongoing small groups to reteach and reassess learning. Grades are to reflect mastery of AKS and not effort or organizational skills.

Substitutes and Leave

We are in the last thirteen days of school and students need the consistency and structure of their teachers. We know that students perform better with you. Thank you for being here to support our students and school!

Last week of school schedule

Due to graduation at Jenkins and the number of parents we are expecting for award ceremonies, we have to adjust our times and move to the gym. Therefore, we have to make a few adjustments to the schedule for the last three days of school. The grade level leads reviewed the schedules and provided feedback. The schedules are published on the training page. Copies of the schedule will be distributed Monday. 8th Grade may be making an adjustment to the Tuesday yearbook signing portion, so please do not print. Thanks!

Yearbook Signing

The yearbooks are here! We only have a few left to sell. Yearbooks will be distributed by homeroom on Tuesday, May 24, 2016 beginning at 2:30 PM in the media center. Teams can coordinate an on team yearbook signing from designated time on Tuesday. Students are expected to stay on team and rotate as directed by the teachers. Schedule will be finalized this week for Tuesday.

8th Grade Celebration and Graduation

We will have an 8th grade celebration on Tuesday, May 24, 2016. The celebration will begin around 12:30 PM until 3:30 PM. We will have a field day type celebration with a variety of outdoor activities and food for the students.

Graduation will be held on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 beginning at 10:00 AM in the gym. At the end of the day, we will dismiss with an 8th grade "final parade" throughout the school. We will provide a published "parade route" and your class can make signs/posters to congratulate our graduates!

Planning on May 17th

We will begin our session with a review of awards. Then, we will complete two surveys: eClass and SAI professional learning. In addition, we will reflect on our eClass journey and identify focus areas for the upcoming school year. Please make sure to meet in the leadership lab during your planning with your laptop.

Vision will focus on the three essential components of literacy workshop that will include specific instructional strategies that will target the architecture of the mini-lesson and conferring in grades K-12 in order to enhance the writing instruction across the district. Elementary teachers will dig deeply into the Units of Study in Writing and learn how to utilize the district resource on a daily basis in their classrooms in order to accelerate writing achievement. Middle and high school teachers will build units of study for literacy workshop in order to enhance the reading and writing instruction that is taking place each day in the classroom. Participants with at least 80% attendance will earn two PLUs; participants with 100% attendance will receive copies of all professional and mentor texts used in their grade level class during the Vision sessions.

Team Recognition Program

Begin thinking about who you would like to recognize!

Each month, we will recognize team members who exhibit the pillars of Jordan MS: Community, Leadership, and Excellence! Teams can submit up to three names each month. Please include a brief narrative describing how the team member exemplified community, leadership, or excellence. We will celebrate during our vertical team meetings on Fridays!
