Clara's Life
Have you ever heard of Clara Barton ? She was born on December 25 [Christmas morning] in 1812 North Oxford Massachusetts. Her full name is Clarissa Harlowe Barton. She became the youngest of five children. Clara had two older sisters and two older brothers. Her brothers were David and Stephen, jr. Her sisters were Sally and Dorthea. Clara started school when she was four years old. When Clara was eleven her brother David fell off the roof of the new barn he had been building and became sick. For the next two years
Clara's Great Accomplishments
Clara Barton helped during the Civil War by being a nurse. When Clara went out on the battlefield the Army generals didn't like her there. She had practiced being a nurse from when her brother fell off the barn roof. She got fired from a job in Washington, DC . She asked her family and friends to write letters to the government to help petition the government, so she got her job back. When she did that Clara was fighting for women's rights. She wrote to newspapers to ask for supplies for soldiers. Then Clara brought supplies to the war front. In 1881, she founded the American Red Cross. The Red Cross helps people hurt from wars or disasters, and the Red Cross give them food and supplies. The Red Cross still helps people today.
Who Clara was
Clara was so brave some soldiers even named their daughters Clara. A quote of Clara's is “Pain and suffering don't take sides”. That means she helped both sides during the Civil War. Once a bullet nicked her sleeve and killed the man she was tending to, and she moved on still to help. When she was fighting for women's rights she said, "I may sometimes be willing to teach for nothing, but if paid at all, I shall never do a man's work for less than a man's pay”.
