November Notes from the LIWP
LIWP at #nErDcampLI
On November 7th, representatives from the LIWP attended and some presented at the first annual #nErDcampLI, an amazing literacy event for educators, authors, illustrators and even students! The event was held at Willets Road School in Roslyn Heights. Darshna Katwala and Heidi Atlas presented “Writing to Learn: Using Low Stakes Writing to Engage Students in K-College" Their presentation used the poem Lanyard by Billy Collins as a shared reading text. Participants had an opportunity to listen to the poem out loud and free write a response. Responses were shared and participants discussed the importance of forming a class community through a collaborative process. Participants had an opportunity to consider how specific language conveys meaning, inquire more into specific memories and make images in the mind. Approaches and adaptations to this presentation were discussed for multiple purposes, across grade levels, and academic disciplines. Lauren Jensen and Kathy Sokolowski presented "Real World Writing: Book Reviews, Podcasts, QR Codes, Oh MY!" They described how their collaboration through the LIWP led to this shared presentation and adaptations to a high school lesson on book reviews through podcasts led to third grade modifications. We were thrilled to have Vicki Alessi and Joanne Bergbom join us as participants at Nerd Camp.
