Graduation Dates Released!
Dear Atholton Families,
Hopefully you received the communications regarding our graduation date. To reiterate, graduation will take place on Friday, May 24, 2019 at 12 noon. School for ALL students will dismiss at 9:45am on May 24. Please mark your calendars. The last day for seniors will be May 22, 2019. A huge THANK YOU to Marriott’s Ridge High School for swapping times with us to accommodate our student athletes!
I had the pleasure of spending time with Atholton students and their families this past week. On Thursday evening, I attended the induction ceremony of the Howard County Commission for Women Hall of Fame. Atholton junior, Maryan Beg’s essay on Harriett Tubman won Honorable Mention in High School Division. The ceremony included remarks by Howard County Executive, Dr. Calvin Ball and Howard County Council Chair, Christina Mercer Rigby. Our own, District 4 Councilwoman, Deb Jung was present as well. Congratulations to Maryan and her family on her recognition and for a well-written essay!
I attended today’s matinee performance of Shrek The Musical. One word –SENSATIONAL! As this was the last performance, word spread of how great this musical was. The show SOLD OUT!! The cast did an outstanding job. The singing, the acting, and the orchestra were all first-class. One spectator remarked to me, “I can’t believe these are high school kids!” Kudos to Mr. Rosen and his drama department for putting on a Broadway caliber show.
This Thursday, April 4 at 6:30pm is Pizza with the Principal. As mentioned earlier, this meeting will focus on determining and developing Atholton’s shared values. . At this meeting we will engage in a conversation about values. That is to say, what values define us, unite us, and make us uniquely Atholton. I encourage you to come and participate in the discussion. Your contribution to the development of our school values in integral to defining our school community. I hope to see you there – mark your calendars.
Finally, a huge thank you to those who donated and came out to see Strutting with the Staff! Keeping with the theme of “The 80s,” our choreographed routine was a hit! We ended up coming home with the Second Runner-Up trophy! Thank you to Ms. Haffey and her students for the rehearsals. The hard work paid off. A special thank you to the teachers who participated. It was a great time had by all. Dr. Martirano and his leadership team had a nice routine as well.
This past Wednesday was the Empty Bowls and Art Show at AHS. The event raised $1,142.00 for Grassroots. We are so very grateful to everyone who donated and supported this powerful community event! Even more impressive was the display of student art work in the auxiliary gym. Students from all levels of Art and Photography were able to showcase the various modes of work they completed this year. I was bowled over by the talent and had a conversation with Mr. Decker and Mr. Brenfleck about creating a permanent display in the front office. Hats off to our students and our fantastic Art Department.
Enjoy the photos of all the events from this past week!
Have a fantastic week!
Warmly,
Robert A. Motley
Principal
