January 2020 - Issue 33
Principal's Message
Dear Evergreen Elementary Families,
Happy New Year, Bobcat family! I hope you all had a wonderful Winter Break with your families. We have action-packed months ahead of us, and summer will be here before we know it.
I would like to thank all of our Holiday Shop volunteers for making this fun event possible for our students. Jessica Bush did an outstanding job coordinating Holiday Shop, and we couldn't have done it without her.
FYI - We are switching the date of our January PTA meeting. The new date will be Thursday, January 23rd at 6:30pm. I hope to see you there!
Another very important date to get on your calendar is our Open House Showcase, which will be held on Tuesday, February 4th. We are no longer holding Open House in May, so this is your opportunity to come see your child's classroom and look at future grade level classrooms. We will be opening Kindergarten classrooms for new, incoming families from 5:00-5:45pm. The MU will be open from 5:45-6:30pm, where our Evergreen Band will be performing. We will be selling pizza, salad, and a drink for $1 per person. All classrooms will be open from 6:30-7:30pm so you can tour your child's classroom and see all the amazing work they have been doing this year. Please be sure to attend!
As we start a New Year, it is a time for all of us to reset and refocus on our priorities at school.
As parents, we encourage your to help your children be successful at school by:
- providing a safe and nurturing home environment with adequate nourishment and rest.
- seeing that the child is on time and attends school regularly.
- encouraging the child to solve conflicts in positive ways.
- establishing a time for homework and reviewing it regularly.
- maintaining an interest in what the child is learning as well as his/her progress in school.
- communicating and working with school staff to support, encourage, and challenge your child.
Students are encouraged to do their best by:
- attending school regularly.
- coming to school prepared with all necessary materials.
- completing and returning homework assignments on time.
- working hard to do their best in class and on schoolwork.
- respecting and cooperating with other students and adults by following classroom and school rules.
- helping to keep the school safe.
- respecting the individual and cultural differences of others.
Teachers are expected to help students and families by:
- providing high quality curriculum and instruction.
- providing assistance to parents so they may help with their child's learning.
- maintaining ongoing communication with parents.
- showing that they care about all students.
- having high expectations for themselves and students.
- providing a safe and positive learning environment.
- respecting the individual and cultural differences of students and their families.
- providing information to parents and students about students' progress.
Thank you again for all your support and here's to a wonderful 2020!
Warm regards,
Jen Hansen
Principal
Open Enrollment Window/Evergreen School Tours
CRPUSD's Open Enrollment Window is from January 6th-February 28th, 2020. If your child is currently attending Evergreen and you wish to continue at Evergreen for 2020-2021, you don't need to do anything during Open Enrollment. You will fill out an Intent to Return form in early Spring 2020.
Here are some other Frequently Asked Questions about Open Enrollment and registration for the 2020-2021 school year:
What if I have another child to enroll at Evergreen for 2020-2021?
Please enroll during the Open Enrollment Window. If you live out of the CRPUSD attendance boundaries, you will need to visit our Student Services Offices at 7165 Burton Avenue to obtain an Inter-District Transfer Form.
What do I need to bring to register my child for TK or Kindergarten?
Please bring a copy of your child's birth certificate, proof of residency (utility bill, rental agreement, mortgage bill), and vaccination record to the Evergreen office. Ms. Rochelle will begin accepting TK/Kindergarten enrollment applications at 8:30am on Monday, January 6, 2020.
What are the birthdates for TK?
Students with a September 2-December 2, 2015 birthdate will be enrolled in TK for the 2020-2021 school year.
Evergreen did not have TK this year. Will you have TK for 2020-2021?
We are hoping to have TK at Evergreen next year, but it all depends on how many TK eligible students enroll during the Open Enrollment period. If we have enough students to fill a full class, we will have TK at Evergreen for 2020-2021.

If you can't make it in to the Evergreen Office, we have also created an online suggestion form. Please click on this link to provide online feedback on how we can make Evergreen an even better place!

President's Message:
Happy New Year Bobcats and welcome to 2020!
Before we left for break, we had a great turnout for our annual Holiday Shop. I'd like to extend a very big thank you to Jessica Bush for taking that on and for organizing it. Also, to the many volunteers that came out to help, we truly would not have been able to make this all happen without you.
Our next family fun night is Project Night which is Wednesday, January 22nd from 6-7:30pm. We look forward to seeing you there!

Communication
Communicating effectively with families is incredibly important to our school. We will utilize several methods to communicate with families: Parent Messaging through our student information system PowerSchool, Facebook, the Evergreen Elementary website, and our Evergreen Express newsletter. Here is how to access all of that information:
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CRPUSDEvergreen/ This is our public Facebook page where updates will be posted.
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/evergreen.crpusd/ This is a closed Facebook group for Evergreen families and staff only. Please request to join this group if you have not done so already.

Evergreen Express Newsletter: The Evergreen Express will be sent on a monthly basis.
Restorative Practices Family Corner
It is our goal to inspire Evergreen families to implement Restorative Practices at home. A great place to have restorative conversations is around the dinner table.
January Question of the Month: "If you could be an animal, what animal would you be, and why?"
Good luck!
Digital Citizenship
Each month, we will provide an article regarding Digital Citizenship and your elementary school student. January focuses on Games and Apps. Here are a few articles and a video on the topic.
