RED - Beginning
COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS
- confuse the cent and dollar symbols.
- confuse the values of two or more coins.
- compare two amounts incorrectly.
- make addition or subtraction errors.
TEACHING FOCUS
Students may be having difficulty with the skills and concepts related to measurement and may struggle with counting coins. Challenges with counting coins often relate to not recognizing the name and value of each coin. Math terms related to the essential concept at this level include dime, nickel, penny, quarter, and value. These students will benefit from additional instruction and practice with:
- identifying pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters.
- identifying the value of each coin.
- counting on by 10s, 5s, and 1s to find the value of a set of coins.
- identifying different coin combinations that make a given amount.
One Grade Level Below
Students may be having difficulty with the skills and concepts related to measurement and may struggle with counting money. Challenges with counting money often relate to not recognizing the name and value of each coin or bill. Math terms related to the essential concepts at this level include cent, penny, nickel, dime, quarter, and dollar. These students will benefit from additional instruction and practice with:
- learning the names and values of coins.
- learning the names and values of paper denominations.
- counting the amount of money represented by a set of coins or bills.
