What's Up in Our Language Arts Classroom

Week of December 14th

Reading and Writing

This week students will be taking the District Benchmark Assessment in reading (Tuesday) and writing (Wednesday). The assessments will be scored for evaluation/reflection purposes only. The scores will not be included in our grade book.

Persuasive/opinion writing is our next writing genre. We'll begin looking at persuasion in commercials, billboards, online pop up ads, and print advertisements.

Reading Log-- I understand how busy this week is for everyone! If at all possible, encourage reading throughout the week and have your child record their reading in their planner, no parent signature needed. Students that read at least 3 days this week (for at least 20 minutes each day) and mark in their planners will earn 5 bonus points! No consequence if your child is unable to complete this due to a busy schedule.

Spelling/Vocabulary--No words this week. We'll pick up our word study in the new year with spelling.

Book Order

Our book order should be delivered on Wednesday or Thursday. I have heard from one parent that their order is a present. If the books you've ordered are a present and you wish for me to send home books in a box (or if you'd like to pick up the books directly from me or the office), please let me know right away.

Read, Read, and Read "Smore"!

I hope everyone has a lovely two week break! During this break, I would love for students to continue reading as much as they can. Cox Elementary will be participating in a reading incentive that I hope will encourage your child to read over the break. I'll be sending home the green paper on Wednesday to be returned after the break for a treat. Thanks!
